ITHACA, N.Y- The Cornell men's tennis team will look to rebound after tough Ivy League losses to ranked opponents over the weekend when it faces No.25 Columbia on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. in its final home match of the season at the Reis Tennis Center.
Senior Alafia Ayeni continued his exceptional play on the court over the weekend, beating Princeton's No. 48-ranked Ryan Seggerman in straight sets in singles from the No. 1 spot. The 39th-ranked duo of Alafia Ayeni and Vladislav Melnic were in a heated battle in doubles against Princeton's No. 31 pair when the match was abandoned.
The ranked duo started strong against Penn the next day when they defeated Penn's 49th-ranked Edoardo Graziani and Kevin Zhu, while Evan Bynoe and Pietro Rimondini wrapped up a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot to earn the Big Red its doubles point. Melnic was up in his third set of singles when the match finished.
No. 25 Columbia (14-7) split its matches last weekend to Princeton and Penn, falling to the Quakers but triumphing over the Tigers, bringing its Ivy League record to 4-2. Cornell's last match against Columbia was in February during the ECAC Indoor Championships where the Big Red fell to the Lions 4-1. Columbia leads the all-time series 60-40-1.
