Marist's Second-Half Goal Lifts Red Foxes Past Women's Soccer

ITHACA, N.Y. – Grace DiVincenzo's second-half goal aided the visiting Marist Red Foxes to a 2-1 victory over Cornell in women's soccer action at Berman Field on Sunday afternoon.

Samantha Caldarelli scored Marist's other goal, while goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner made 12 saves for the Red Foxes (1-1-2).

Senior Sara DeGraw scored her first collegiate goal for the Big Red (0-2-0), who outshot Marist by 20, 26-6, including a 13-3 ledger in shots on target.

"We created plenty of chances. We had the ball in the offensive third, and the quality offensive play was us from start to finish. We did more than enough to win," Cornell head coach Rob Ferguson said. "There was a phase in the second half where it got scrappy, but we stretched them, got in behind them and created chances. The flip side is the composure and quality in front of the goal need to improve. It's the hardest part of the game and we've got to fix it."

Despite Cornell out-possessing Marist to open the contest, the Red Foxes found the back of the net in the ninth minute. Caldarelli sent her right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the goal out of reach of the Big Red goalkeeper, Nicole Shulman.

Cornell continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the first half, recording 17 shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes of play.

DeGraw tied the game in the 43rd minute, receiving a pass from junior defender Lily Ellingson, lobbing a left-footed shot over Kelchner's head.

Marist broke the tie in the 70th minute as Sam Stormo's cross from the right side was kicked in by DiVincenzo off a bounce inside the 8-yard box. Cornell sophomore goalkeeper Erica Fox, who entered to start the second half, got a hand of the ball but went into the left side of the net.

Senior defender Isabella DeLew and junior forward Laken Gallman each tried to net the equalizing goal in the final 10 minutes. Kelchner was able to make the save on both attempts.
