Carnevale's Goal Not Enough as Men's Soccer Falls to Vermont

ITHACA, N.Y. – Westin Carnevale's first-half goal was not enough for the Cornell men's soccer team, as the Big Red fell to Vermont, 2-1, in the team's home opener at Berman Field on Tuesday evening.

Yaniv Bazini and Max Murray scored for Vermont (4-1-1), who extended its unbeaten streak to four games. Nathan Silveira made three saves for the Catamounts.

Carnevale's goal was his second in as many games for the Big Red (3-1-0), who had its 15-game home unbeaten streak snapped on Tuesday. Connor Drought and Alioune Ka recorded assists on Carnevale's tally.

"I thought it was a great game. I knew coming into this game that Vermont is a postseason team. I'll be shocked if they don't make the postseason. I'll be shocked if they don't win their conference," said John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer. "I thought we were the better team tonight. We played better soccer than they did. We created chances; we just got to put them away. The only thing I'm upset with tonight is the result."

After both teams were called for being offsides in the first six minutes, Vermont and Cornell combined for three goals over seven minutes.

Vermont scored first in the 11th minute as a goal kick by Silveira was headed in the Catamounts' attacking midfield. Bazini picked up the loose ball using a gentle header to push the ball past a pair of Big Red defenders and lofted his shot over Cornell goalkeeper Ryan Friedberg.

Friedberg finished the contest with three saves.

Just over a minute later, Carnevale netted the equalizer. Ka initiated the scoring chance by keeping the ball from crossing the end line, passing to Drought in the 18-yard box. Drought wasted no time in passing the ball to Carnevale, who curved his shot into the bottom right corner of the goal out of the reach of Silveira.

The game did not remain tied for long, however. Six minutes later, Vermont regained the lead after Joe Morrison had his point-blank shot stopped by Friedberg. Murray took advantage of Friedberg not corraling the scoring chance, depositing the eventual game-winning goal into the net.

Cornell had two shots on goal following Murray's go-ahead marker, but Silveira saved Daniel Samways and Carnevale's shots.

Offense came at a premium for both squads in the second half as the teams combined for just five shot attempts over the final 45 minutes compared to the 13 attempts in the first half.

Emeka Eneli recorded the first two shot attempts of the second half in the 70th minute. A Vermont defender blocked his first shot before his second-chance opportunity went wide.

Noel Ortega logged Cornell's lone shot on goal in the second half.

The second half was rather physical, with all five of the game's bookings coming in the half.

A Vermont player was issued a red card in the 81st minute. After the Catamounts went down a min, the Big Red possessed the ball for the majority of the remaining minutes of the contest, but Cornell could not net the equalizer.

Matthew Hutchison had the best chance in the 84th minute, but his shot went over the net.

Game Notes

• Tuesday was the fifth all-time meeting between Cornell and Vermont and the first since Sept. 12, 2010. The Catamounts now lead the series, 4-1.

• With his assist on Carnevale's first-half goal, Drought now has an assist in his last three appearances. He is the first Big Red player to have a three-game assist streak since Tyler Bagley had five assists over a three-game stretch last season.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will return to the road for its next contest on Saturday when the Big Red travel to Western New York to play Niagara. First touch from Niagara Field is slated for 7 p.m. Game action will be broadcast on YouTube.
