Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Kiingi’s Game-Winner Gives Men’s Soccer Its Sixth Straight Road Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Kisa Kiingi's 70th-minute goal guided the Cornell men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Marist at Tenney Stadium on Saturday night.

The victory for Cornell was the Big Red's sixth consecutive road win, matching Vermont for the longest active Division I road win streak.

Ryan Friedberg recorded his third solo clean sheet of the season, making three saves for the Big Red (5-1-0).

"I knew coming in, it was going to be a battle," said John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer. "Marist is a good team with a lot of experience. Playing our fifth road game over three weeks and coming away with a 6-1 record is a testament to the mettle of this group.

"Tonight was a dogfight and although we did bend a couple of times, the guys never broke. It was the perfect game to lead us into Ivy League play."

Henrique Cruz logged two of the Marist's three shots on goal, while Sam Ilin made one save for the Red Foxes (4-2-1).

Offense came at a premium as the Big Red and Red Foxes had just five of the combined 25 shot attempts were on target. Cornell's defense held Marist to three of its 12 shot attempts on target, while the Red Foxes yielded just two shots on goal on the Big Red's 13 attempts.

Early in the contest, Emeka Eneli was taken down inside the 18-yard box, leading to a Cornell penalty kick in the fifth minute. The Big Red chose Eneli to take the attempt, but Ilin made a diving save to his right to keep the game scoreless.

Not much offense occurred over the remaining 40 minutes of action as Cruz logged the lone shot on goal in the 40th minute, which Friedberg stopped. Cruz's shot snapped a streak of seven shot attempts that were missed or blocked.

Kiingi took advantage of a Marist turnover on a goal kick in the 70th minute, lasering his right-footed shot from the right side of the 18-yard box to put the Big Red ahead.

Cruz had a chance to net the equalizer in the 87th minute, but Friedberg made the save.

Game Notes

• Saturday was the second match between Cornell and Marist in as many years. Cornell has won both matches against the Red Foxes, outscoring Marist by a 6-1 margin.

• With the win, Cornell is 23-9-1 on the road since 2018, good for a .712 win percentage. So far in 2022, Cornell is 5-0 away from home and is the only Division I team with five road wins this year.

Ryan Friedberg now has 3.5 clean sheets this season, which ranks as the third-most by a freshman goalkeeper. He is one clean sheet away from matching Quinn O'Sullivan's 4.5 figure in 1992.

• Friedberg recorded his sixth victory of the season, one away from tying Stephen Bott (1983) and O'Sullivan's active program record for wins by a first-year goalkeeper.

• Cornell improved to 35-7-4 when scoring first under head coach John Smith and have won all six games when doing so in 2022.

• The Big Red now has a 37-16-6 record when allowing one goal or less in Smith's tutelage.
