Cornell Opens Season With 2-1 Victory Over Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Cornell field hockey team (1-0, 0-0 Ivy) opened the 2022 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Colgate (2-3, 0-0 Patriot) on Wednesday, September 7 at Tyler's Field in Hamilton, N.Y. Seniors Claire Jones and Bridget Mahoney each earned their name on the score sheet, totaling for two goals in the third quarter.

Senior goalkeeper Aerin Park notched three saves in the contest and sophomore midfielder Hanke Govaert tallied three shots on goal.

The Big Red opened the first quarter with some back-and-forth action as the team settled into the first game of the season. Just three minutes into the contest, Park had already earned a save when she blocked a shot by Colgate's Ella Murphy.

In the second quarter, and incredible defensive save by Colgate's Amanda Allen foiled a shot attempt by freshman forward Grace Leahy, who was inches from opening the Big Red's scoring efforts

After halftime, the Big Red controlled a majority of the possession. A long ball clearance from senior defender Caroline Ramsey was gathered by senior midfielder Bridget Mahoney, who slotted the ball up to Jones. Jones controlled to ball near the end line, where she wound up for a shot and slot the ball between the Colgate goalkeeper Anna Unger for the first Big Red goal of the season.

Just three minutes later, Cornell capitalized on a second opportunity. What began as a penalty corner turned into a cleanup shot by Mahoney that she ripped past the Colgate defense, to grab the two goal lead.

Colgate responded with a goal of their own with just 45 seconds left in the quarter, but the Cornell defense held strong, earning a 2-1 win over the Raiders.
