Field Hockey Is Postseason Bound After 2-0 Shutout Win Over Ivy Leader Penn

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell field hockey team clinched a bid to the inaugural Ivy League Tournament after a statement 2-0 victory over first-place Penn on Friday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red's second consecutive shutout advanced its record to 9-3 (4-1 Ivy), while the Quakers suffered their first conference loss in falling to 6-7 overall (4-1 Ivy).

Senior All-American Caroline Ramsey scored both Cornell goals, topping her own single season goal-scoring record with 20 and becoming the first Big Red player to reach 50 career scores in the win. Julia Ramsey and Rease Coleman assisted on an opening-scoring penalty corner, with Ramsey drilled home a penalty stroke, her fourth this season without a miss. Her 12th career game-winning goal tied Catie DeStio's school record mark, while her sixth in a single season put her alone at the top of the charts. Freshman goalkeeper Martha Broderick posted her second straight solo shutout and didn't ned to make a save. Gabby Volpe had a defensive save behind her.

Cornell held an 11-7 edge in shots (5-1 in shots on goal) and had eight penalty corners to Penn's five. Both of those numbers narrowed in the fourth after the Big Red took its 2-0 lead, with the shots being 10-3 and the penalty corners 7-2 entering the final period.

Penn goalkeeper Frederique Wollaert made three saves to keep the Quakers in the game, while Allison Kuzyk took four of the team's seven attempts inside the circle.

At 4-1, the Big Red has now clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament and is now in a position, with wins in its final two Ivy League contests, to clinch at least a share of the conference regular season crown. The win snapped a seven-game skid against the Quakers and was its 12th straight contests with multiple goals.

It took just 5:40 for the Big Red to get on the board, with Ramsey blasting a lifted shot over the Penn defense on a penalty corner to put the home team in the driver's seat early. It wasn't really threatened the rest of the half, as Cornell held a 7-1 edge in shots at the break. A scoreless middle two periods set up Ramsey's second goal, this time making her 4-for-4 on the season on penalty strokes. She  earned the stroke after being bowled over while taking a corner, drawing a Quaker yellow card.

The Big Red will face No. 13 Syracuse in a key non-conference matchup on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Marsha Dodson Field.
