ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior forward Laken Gallman and Columbia's Shira Cohen traded goals as the Cornell women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Columbia at an unseasonably warm Berman Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Gallman netted the lone tally for Cornell (3-2-5, 0-2-1 Ivy) in the 23rd minute, while Cohen's marker came in the 55th minute for Columbia (7-2-2, 1-1-1 Ivy).
Both teams' offenses were on full display Wednesday as each side recorded 16 shot attempts. Despite the even number of attempts, Columbia tripled Cornell in shots on goal, 9-3.
Junior goalkeeper Erica Fox continued her standout play between the pipes for the Big Red, logging a career-high eight saves, while Paige Nurkin stopped two Cornell shots.
"It was a fun game," Cornell women's soccer head coach Rob Ferguson said. "I'm guessing it was a fun game to watch for the neutrals. I just said to the team that I was very proud of them. I was proud of what they put in against a very good team. They came out here tonight, gave everything they could handle, and, fair play to Columbia, they did the same."
Cornell and Columbia traded a pair of scoring opportunities over the opening 20 minutes before Cornell could get the ball past Nurkin. Pauwels utilized a sliding pass to evade a Columbia defender, enabling Gallman to deposit a left-footed strike into the top left corner of the goal.
"She's sly, like a little fox," Ferguson said on Gallman's ability to create scoring chances. "She's always finding these gaps and knows exactly where to touch the ball when she gets it. There's no one I'd rather have on the ball on the edge or in the 18. There's always a chance she'll find a way to manufacture a goal, and she did exactly that."
Fox made three more saves over the final 12-plus minutes of the opening half to preserve the Big Red's one-goal lead.
Columbia came out of the halftime break with two more scoring opportunities, both of which Fox was able to save.
The Lions tally came following a shot attempt by Kat Jordan, and a sliding Cohen tapped the loose ball on the edge of the goal line. Cornell player attempted to clear the ball out of the area but to no avail.
Following Cohen's game-tying goal, Columbia had a chance to give the Lions the lead, but Claire Pinnie's shot glanced off the left post.
At one point, Cornell recorded eight out of the next 10 shot attempts over 25 minutes, with two being blocked and two others saved by Nurkin. One of Columbia's chances came off the boot of Jordan that clanked off the right post.
Columbia had a slight edge in corner kicks, 8-7, and both sides played a relatively clean match with only 12 fouls called throughout the contest.
