Penalty-Kick Lifts Reigning Ivy League Champion Penn Over Big Red, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Cornell men's soccer team fell to reigning Ivy League champion, the University of Pennsylvania, 1-0, at River Fields on Saturday night. Penn collected their first Ivy win of the season and moved to 3-3-3. Cornell dropped to 4-3-2 and still aims for it's first league victory on the year.

Cornell and Penn met on the pitch as the projected top-two finishers in the Ivy League. The first half was a clinic by the defensive front-lines, as both teams would only manage to get off one shot a piece, with neither testing the goaltenders.

The Quakers got on the board in the 59th-minute when the Big Red was called for a handball in the box, leading to a successful Stas Korzeniowski penalty kick. Cornell outshot Penn 10-3 in the game, but was never able find the game-tying tally.

First-year goalie Isaac Delgado manned the net for Cornell, registering one save on the day. Nick Christoffersen was the Quaker goaltender, making two stops between the pipes.

"If the game was determined by how well you play between the boxes, then we would have won. The fact is though, in this game you live and die by how well you do in and around both boxes and we came up short in those areas", John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned.

"We will regroup in preperation for Colgate on Tuesday, and look to seal an Ivy League opening win against Princeton next Saturday", Smith also added.
