CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Cornell field hockey team clawed all afternoon for a goal that never came, falling 1-0 in a tight contest to third-seeded Princeton on Friday afternoon at Harvard's Berylson Field in the semifinals of the inaugural Ivy League Tournament. The Big Red closed its season after a school-record 12 wins, finishing 12-5.
Cornell held a 10-7 edge in corners and a 10-6 advantage on shots, but was only able to put one of its shots on cage. The Big Red had four penalty corners in the final 3.8 seconds, but wasn't able to convert and knot the game after Princeton scored early in the third quarter.
Princeton's Ottilie Sykes scored the lone goal of the contest 1:51 into the second half on a penalty corner, one of just two shots on cage for the Tigers in the contest.
Martha Broderick turned away the other.
Cornell set the tone early with its pressure, but it was the Tigers who appeared to get a goal less than three minutes in after a penalty corner. That score was overturned after a lengthy review because it wasn't touched in the circle.
The Big Red held a 5-2 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners at the break, with Broderick making the lone save of the contest in the opening minutes.
Cornell didn't have much going in the fourth until the late flurry of penalty corners, but had a number of dangerous opportunities to find the tying score. It was not to be, as the final opportunity went wide and Princeton advanced.
The Big Red season concludes with a 12-5 mark, a school record for wins, and new standards in goals (58), assists (62) and points (178).
