Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Plays Columbia To A 0-0 Draw, Awaits NCAA Tournament Fate

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team tied 0-0 with Columbia from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Saturday night. The Big Red fell to 8-4-3, while the Lions shifted to 2-8-5.

Standout freshman Alex Harris peppered Columbia's senior goalkeeper Michael Collodi with shots in the opening half, managing to get three on the net. Collodi would stand tall, stopping all three shot-attempts. One yellow card was assesed to each squad in the half, with one going to Kisa Kiingi (Cornell) and the other going to Jackson Oever (Columbia).

Both teams attempted six shots in the opening frame, but Harris' three were the only to reach the net for either team.

In the 66th-minute, Balazs Feher found Harris cutting across the middle of the box for what supposedly would be the opening tally of the game, but the goal was rescinded due to an offside.

In the 89th-minute the Big Red tacked on another goal that would be called back due to another offsides infraction.

"In the first half we played a bit like a team that had the wind taken out of their sails after hearing the result in the game between Brown and Yale", John Smith,  the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned. The Yale Bulldogs and Brown Bears tied 0-0, resulting in a fifth-place finish for Cornell men's soccer which sits the squad outside of the inaugural Ivy Tournament.

Coach Smith also added, "The second half was more of a representation of who we are. We attacked constantly and carved open a bunch of great chances, and really deserved to send our incredible seniors away with the win".

The Big Red has had an incredible amount of production from it's freshman class during the regular season. The Cornellians are led statistically by freshman forwards Harris and Feher. Harris leads the Ivy League in points (28) and goals (12), which puts him at the top of the all-time Cornell freshman points and goals scorer list. "We have played most games with an extremely young group this year. The experience those guys will have gained from the season will be vaulable for us in years to come", Smith goes on to say.

Next Up
The Cornell men's soccer team will be on the outside looking in as the Ivy League Tournament is concerned, as the Big Red finishes fifth in the regular season standing. Cornell currently sits 32nd in the RPI rankings, which is the highest ranked Ivy program in that standing.

The Big Red will be on standby, as it waits to find out which side of the NCAA Tournament bubble it will fall on. The NCAA Tournament selection show will take place on Nov. 13.
