ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell field hockey coaching staff, led by head coach Andy Smith, has been named the 2023 NFHCA Mideast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year after a majority vote of its regional colleagues. The 2023 NFHCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year will be announced on Jan 11, 2024 at the NFHCA Hall of Fame reception sponsored by AstroTurf® at the organization's annual convention.
Smith, along with assistant coaches Gareth Terrett and Kellie Joyce, helped guide Cornell to a school-record 12 wins and a second-place finish in the Ivy League at 5-2. Cornell reached its highest ranking in school history at No. 17 in the NFHCA poll and was the No. 2 seed in the inaugural Ivy League field hockey tournament. Led by the Big Red's first-ever regional player of the year,
Caroline Ramsey, Cornell led the nation in scoring average (3.21), assists per game (3.65), and points per game (10.47), all single-season school records. The Big Red was also second in Division I in scoring margin (1.99), including a pair of eight-goal victories.
The Big Red joined Ivy League rival Harvard, the Northeast Regional, Coaching Staff of the Year, to allow the Ivy to claim two of the five staff honors.
