ITHACA, N.Y. — Coming off a trio of victories in its first weekend of the spring season, the Cornell men's tennis team heads to the Central time zone for its next pair of matches this weekend.
The Big Red will square off against Big Ten opponent Nebraska, before heading to Des Moines, Iowa, to play Drake.
Cornell's match against Nebraska is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. Match action will be broadcast on Huskers.com and live results will be made available through the same website. The following day, the Big Red will play Drake with doubles action beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
Last weekend, Cornell had a strong start to the spring campaign as the Big Red defeated Buffalo, 7-0, St. John's, 5-2, and Niagara, 6-1.
Cornell won all three of its matches from No. 1 to No. 3 singles, highlighted by a trio of wins by sophomore
Adit Sinha. Fellow sophomore
Radu Papoe (No. 1), senior
Vladislav Melnic (No. 2), and freshman
Petar Teodorovic (No. 3) all went 2-0 on the weekend in singles action.
Papoe and Sinha, and Teodorovic and junior
Samuel Paquette, each went 3-0 in their respective doubles matches.
Scouting Nebraska
Nebraska enters the weekend with a 2-1 overall record after defeating Creighton and South Alabama. The Huskers fell to Clemson, 4-0, this past Sunday.
Lars Johann (2-0), Roni Hietaranta and Shunya Maruyama (2-1) have a Huskers-leading two wins this spring. Hietaranta has made all of his appearances at the top singles spot.
Cornell hosted Nebraska last year on March 12, defeating the Huskers by a 6-1 score.
Alafia Ayeni,
Radu Papoe, and
Jack McCarthy had straight-set victories, while
Pietro Rimondini and
Adit Sinha had three-set victories.
Scouting Drake
Drake enters the weekend with a 3-1 record after defeating Creighton and Marquette by 7-0 scores. The Bulldogs also defeated Northern Illinois, 4-1, before falling to Illinois this past Sunday, 5-2.
The match against Cornell will be Drake's second of three, as the Bulldogs will be coming off a match against Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., on Friday. Sunday's match against the Big Red will be the first of two matches on the day for Drake, as they will also face Washburn, a Kansas-based Division II school, at 4 p.m. CT.
Cornell defeated Drake at the Reis Tennis Center last year, 6-1, thanks to the Big Red claiming a point in every singles match. Ayeni, Melnic, Papoe, and
Evan Bynoe had straight-set victories for Cornell.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will have one more match before the ECAC Indoor Championships, when it hosts South Florida on Feb. 10 at the Reis Tennis Center. Doubles action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
