CAMBRIDGE, Ma - Cornell and Harvard split day one of their three game Ivy-League season opening-series. The Big Red and the Crimson met on Saturday morning for the tie-breaker. Cornell took the victory 5-4, winning its opening series of Ivy-League play.
Emma Antich singled a hit down the middle of the diamond, helping
Kate Callaway make it to home-plate to take an early 1-0 lead. The Big Red smashed two one-run homers in the second-inning from
Maicie Levitt and
Lauren Holt to give Cornell a healthy 3-0 lead after two. At the top of the fifth,
Celia Macari tacked on another home run with two outs and the bases empty. Cornell extended the lead to 5-0 on Mari Zorrilla's sixth-inning single, which batted
Ella Harrod to the plate.
The Crimson came storming back, registering four unanswered runs (Heffley, Jean, Shaw, Fitzpatrick), putting them in an opportunistic position trailing just 5-4 at the bottom of the seventh.
Big Red pitcher
Kyrie Denny was relieved in the final portion of the game by
Maxine McCraw. Denny pitched a strong game, facing 27 batters in six innings and allowing just two earned runs. It was McCraw that would be tasked with pitching Cornell to victory. She would do just that, facing four batters (nine pitches) and only allowing one hit to seal the game. For Denny, she would be awarded with the win on the mound, moving to 2-3 on the season.
