ITHACA, N.Y. — The No. 29-ranked Cornell men's tennis team will conclude non-conference play on Saturday when it welcomes Western Michigan to the Reis Tennis Center.
Doubles action between the Broncos and Big Red is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Cornell (12-3) is coming off a 5-2 setback against then No. 34-ranked VCU last weekend.
Sophomore
Radu Papoe, who is No. 95th in the ITA singles rankings, cruised in his match at No. 1 singles against No. 93-ranked Matisse Bobichon, 6-4, 6-1. Fellow sophomore
Nathan Mao was the other victorious Cornell player on the day, posting an 6-0, 6-4 victory over Joaquim Almeida at No. 5 singles.
Scouting Western Michigan
Western Michigan enters the weekend with a 9-6 overall record and a 5-0 mark in Mid-American Conference (MAC) action. The Broncos will face MAC rival Buffalo on Friday at 11 a.m. before making the trip to Ithaca.
The Broncos have won its last five matches and six of its last seven contests.
Anton Arzhankin has a 10-5 mark in dual matches this season, including an 8-1 mark in matches at the No. 2 singles spot. Arzhankin and Jackson Boone have each won their last five matches and are 8-2 in their last 10.
The tandem of Benjamin George and Brogan Pierce have succeeded this season, winning a Western Michigan-leading eight matches in dual matches.
Cornell and Western Michigan are meeting for the second consecutive season. The Big Red claimed a 5-1 victory last year thanks to a quartet of victories in singles matches, highlighted by straight-set victories by Papoe and and
Jack McCarthy.
Looking Ahead
The Big Red will open Ivy League play on Friday, April 7 when it travels to Philadelphia to play No. 60-ranked Penn. First action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
