#40 Men’s Tennis Hosts Brown, Yale in Final Two Home Matches of Season

4/19/2023 2:00:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. — The No. 40-ranked Cornell men's tennis team will host Brown and Yale in its final two home matches of the regular season this weekend at the Reis Tennis Center.

This weekend will also serve as the final home matches for seniors Matthew Druyanoff and Vladislav Melnic.

Cornell is coming off a split of its weekend series in northern New England when it fell to No. 15-ranked Harvard, 4-0, before defeating Dartmouth, 6-1, the following day.

Radu Papoe, who is ranked No. 77 in the most recent ITA singles rankings, will look to continue his torrid stretch as of late as the sophomore has won his last eight completed matches and has a 14-1 mark on the season, all of which have come at the top singles position.

Overall, Cornell has a 16-1 mark in matches at No. 1 singles this season, good for a .941 win percentage. The second-best win percentage of any singles position is No. 5 with a 12-6 record (.667).

Fellow sophomore Adit Sinha also has a double-digit win total this season, posting a 12-3 record in dual matches this season — including a 9-2 mark at No. 4 singles.

Scouting Brown

Brown enters this weekend's pair of matches with a 13-13 overall record, but is winless in its four Ivy League matches so far. The Bears have dropped each of its last six matches as they are seeking their first win since defeating Merrimack, 7-0, on March 25.

During its six-match losing streak, the Bears have only recorded six points. Niraj Komatineni and Roger Chou have registered four of Brown's victories, posting a pair of singles victories, respectively, at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.

Cornell has had its fair share of success against Brown as of late, winning each of the last 12 meetings. The last three victories for the Big Red have come in sweeps — two of which were by 7-0 scores.

Brown has not defeated Cornell since posting back-to-back 4-3 victories in the 2011-12 season. The Bears won the first meeting at the ECAC Indoor Championships in Hanover, N.H., before winning the Ivy League match in Providence.

Scouting Yale

Yale has an 11-8 overall record and 1-3 mark in Ivy League matches heading into its matches against Columbia and Cornell this weekend.

The Bulldogs are coming off being swept by Penn and Princeton at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center last week.

Similar to its opponent on Saturday, Cornell has also had its success against Yale as of late, posting victories in each of the last nine meetings.

Cornell edged Yale, 4-3, last year in New Haven, Conn., as Papoe's 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles proved to be the difference maker. Two of Yale's three points came on Cornell retirements.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will play its final match of the regular season on Saturday, April 29, when it travels to New York City to take on its Empire State rival Columbia. The match between the Big Red and the No. 13-ranked Lions is scheduled for 1 p.m.
