#30 Men's Tennis to Open Ivy League Play Against #52 Penn, #50 Princeton

ITHACA, N.Y. — The No. 30-ranked Cornell men's tennis team opens up Ivy League play with matches against No. 52-ranked Penn and No. 50-ranked Princeton this weekend.

Cornell (13-3) will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Quakers (9-7, 1-0 Ivy) at 1 p.m. on Friday. The Big Red will then host the Tigers (12-10, 0-1 Ivy) in the first of three Ancient Eight contests at the Reis Tennis Center on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Sophomore Radu Papoe continues to rank among the top 125 players nationally in singles. He and fellow sophomore Aman Sharma are tied for the most wins in singles matches this season, as they both have 11-1 records.

Papoe is riding a team-leading five-game win streak heading into this weekend's matches.

In doubles action, Cornell has excelled at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, combining for a 20-9 record. Junior Samuel Paquette and freshman Petar Teodorovic have a 9-3 record at the No. 3 position, while senior Vladislav Melnic and Papoe have the best mark at the No. 2 spot with a 5-3 record.

Scouting Penn

Penn enters Friday's match riding a four-match win streak, having defeated Charlotte, Temple, then-No. 46-ranked Princeton, and Delaware in the stretch. The Quakers are a perfect 6-0 at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers this season.

Edoardo Graziani has played all but one match at the No. 1 position for Penn this season, posting a 7-6 record with two unfinished matches. His brother, Manfredi, is 12-2 in dual matches this season, including an 8-2 mark at the No. 5 position. Aditya Gupta has the second-most wins in singles for the Quakers, posting a combined 9-5 record between the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

In doubles matches, Edoardo Graziani and Kevin Zhu are 6-1 at No. 1 doubles with six unfinished matches. Manfredi Graziani and Gupta also have won six doubles matches this season.

Cornell and Penn previously played in February in the third-place game at the ECAC Indoor Championships in Hanover, N.H. The Big Red posted a 4-3 victory, thanks to straight-set victories in singles by Papoe (No. 1), and sophomore Adit Sinha (No. 4). Melnic (No. 2) and Paquette (No. 6) posted three-set victories to ensure the Big Red's third-place finish at the tournament.

The Big Red is seeking its first win streak over the Quakers since winning 11 straight matches from 2008-18.

Scouting Princeton

Princeton opened Ivy League play last weekend with a 6-1 loss to Penn last Saturday at Jadwin Gymnasium. Fnu Nidunjianzan was the lone Tiger to record a victory as he defeated Edoardo Graziani, 6-2, 6-3.

Ellis Short has a Princeton-leading 15 wins in dual matches this season, logging a 15-4 record. Short has appeared any where between the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, and has a 10-3 mark at the No. 5 spot this season.

Nidunjianzan (14-7), Sebastian Sec (12-6), and Thomas Bosancic (10-7) all have double-digit win totals in dual matches this season.

The tandem of Alan Kam and Sec have a 5-1 duals record this season which are the most wins by a Princeton duo.

Cornell and Princeton faced each other in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Indoor Championships where the Big Red posted a 4-3 victory.

In the match, Cornell claimed the doubles point before striaght-set victories by Sinha and Melnic gave Cornell a 3-0 advantage. Three consecutive victories by Princeton evened the match at 3-all before Papoe, who was ranked No. 50 at the time, defeated Nidunjianzan, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, to give Cornell the win.

Looking Ahead

Following this weekend's matches, Cornell will make the trip to No. 15-ranked Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend. Both matches will take place at 1 p.m., and will be streamed lived on Stretch Internet.
