Sprint Football Announces Captains For 2023 Season

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell sprint football team has selected its captains for the 2023 season. Sophomore linebacker Mike Mosier, senior safety Ryan Murphy, senior offensive lineman Will Savage and senior tight end Will Anderson were voted captains by their teammates.

"I told the players that I am really proud of their elections," said Nick Quartaro, the Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football. "If the coaching staff was choosing, we'd be unanimous on those players. We feel really good about the people they've selected."

Mosier recorded 24 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack and recovered two fumbles as a freshman last season. Murphy is in his first season with the sprint football program.

"It is both an honor and a privilege to have been selected as a captain by my teammates," Mosier said. "As a sophomore, being a captain means that I should primarily lead by example while learning from my fellow captains, who are seniors. I look forward to a great season while learning as much as I lead."

Murphy added, "Being a captain means to put the needs of your team above all else and show up for your teammates in any way possible, regardless of circumstance."

Savage, a member of the 2022 CSFL All-Academic team, has been a fixture on the Big Red's offensive line for the past two seasons.

"I was honored to be selected as a captain by my teammates," Savage said. "To me, being a captain is about carrying on the traditions of those that came before me, and working with all of the other leaders on the team, not just the other captains, to raise the bar every day."

Anderson, who switched to tight end in the offseason, was a linebacker in 2021 and 2022. He finished with 42 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks last season.

"Being a captain of this team means carrying the legacy of the guys that held the title before us," Anderson said. "When you look up at the pictures of the past 86 years of Sprint Football captains in our office in Schoellkopf Hall, you realize the weight that goes along with leading this team and continuing the tradition of Cornell Sprint Football. Throughout our program's history, we've always found a way to prevail through times of uncertainty, and for us, it's about doing the same and leaving the program better than we found it for the next group of leaders after us."

Cornell opens the 2023 season at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, at Schoellkopf Field against the Caldwell Cougars.
