NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Senior
Caroline Ramsey is well on her way to smashing Cornell scoring records. With many more days like Sunday, Ramsey's records may be around for awhile. The senior All-American used a single-game record four goals to set the school's all-time goals mark (44) in an 8-0 victory over Sacred Heart at Yale's Johnson Field. The Big Red improved to 5-2, while the Pioneers slipped to 1-6.
Ramsey scored three goals on penalty corners in the game's first 8:08 to stake Cornell out to a lead it would never surrender, including matching and setting the goals record. She ended the day having surpassed Krysten Mayers '18 mark of 42. She also upped her career scoring total to 97 points, just two off Mayers' record and three from becoming the first Big Red player to surpass 100 points. Her 10th career game-winning goal jumped her into fourth place all-time, and she already stands atop the list for defensive saves (15).
A couple more afternoons like this and Ramsey will be well on the way to threatening her own single-season school records as well. For the weekend, Ramsey scored seven goals with two assists (16 points) to up her season total to 13 goals and 28 points - her 13 goals stand five below her current record of 18 from 2021, while the 28 points is within striking distance of the 40 set that same season. Ramsey's four goals matched a single game mark set previously on five occasions, while the team's eight goals ranks third, one off the record of nine. In all, the Big Red registered 24 points for fifth, one more than the 23 points it scored 48 hours earlier in a win over Dartmouth.
The Big Red dominated throughout, outshooting the Pioneers 24-3, including 24-1 over the first three quarters. The Big Red's two goalkeepers,
Martha Broderick (39 minutes) and
Jane McNally (21 minutes) did not face a shot on goal in picking up the shared shutout. Cornell also won nine penalty corners to five for Sacred Heart.
Along with Ramsey's big day, four other Big Red players scored goals (
Hanke Govaert,
Grace Leahy,
Vivienne Mueller and
Polly Parsons). It was the fourth consecutive game with a goal from Leahy, and the second straight for Parsons, who also was credited with an assist. For the sophomore Mueller, it was her first career goal. Both
Julia Ramsey and
Claire Wolfe were credited with three assists each, with
Rease Coleman also registering one helper. Both Ramsey, the nation's leader in assists, and Wolfe tied their career-best marks with three and had six apiece for the weekend.
Emma Brayford squeezed off two of Sacred Heart's three shots, while goalkeeper Samantha Maresca made nine saves.
