SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior captain
Caroline Ramsey staked the Cornell field hockey team to a 2-0 lead, but seventh-ranked Syracuse came from behind to collect a 4-2 win over the Big Red on Wednesday evening at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange remained unbeaten on the season at 4-0, while Cornell dropped its season opener.
Ramsey went 2-for-2 on penalty corners as the Big Red came out flying, taking its lead 11:38 into the contest. Ramsey's sister, Julia, assisted on both goals as the inserter, with both
Sarah Rogalski and
Claire Wolfe being credited with assists on the stop. Freshman goalkeeper
Martha Broderick made 10 saves in her first collegiate game, including nine in the second half while keeping the visitors in the game.
Eefke van der Nieuwenhof scored three of the team's four goals, including its first tally late in the first quarter to stem Cornell's momentum and the go-ahead goal early in the fourth. The Orange held decisive advantages in shots (19-4) and corners (13-2) in winning its fourth straight to kick off the campaign.
The Big Red squeezed off three shots in the opening quarter of the season, with Ramsey's two on penalty corners beating SU goalkeeper Brooke Borzymowski. van der Nieuwenhof turned the tide with 1:28 left in the quarter and Hattie Madden made it all square on a stunning backhand chip in the upper corner with just 69 seconds remaining before halftime, the only goal scored among the six during the run of play.
While the Orange controlled play in the second half, the Cornell defense was up to the task. Syracuse out-shot the Big Red 9-0 in the third, but Broderick made six saves to keep the score level entering the final period.
Just over a minute into the final quarter, Syracuse scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty stroke, as van der Nieuwenhof perfectly placed a shot for her second score, then slammed home a corner five minutes later to add some insurance.
