Big First Quarter Lifts Yale Field Hockey Over Cornell

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale scored three first quarter goals and never looked back en route to a 5-0 win over Cornell on Friday evening at Johnson Field. The Big Red fell to 3-7 (1-3 Ivy), while the Bulldogs improved to 7-4 (2-2 Ivy).

Lauren Venter and Chiara Picciafuoco had two goals apiece and Alexa Pitts made them stand up with five saves in picking up the shutout. Hettie Whittington notched a goal and an assist for the winners.

Yale held a 16-12 edge in shots, though it was 8-6 Cornell at the break despite a 4-0 deficit on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs also held a narrow 8-6 edge in penalty corners.

Martha Broderick stopped six shots in goal for the Big Red and Uma Kaeding attempted four shots to lead the offense.

Cornell had multiple dangerous chances in the first two minutes of play but couldn't capitalize, leaving the door open for Yale. The home team took full advantage. Yale got on the board 5:49 in when Broderick came out to stop a Yale transition attempt and got her pads on the first shot, but put the rebound back on goal to make it 1-0. The Bulldogs made it 2-0 four minutes later when Venter tipped in a shot in a scrum in front of the goal. The score was reviewed and confirmed, with Victoria Collee credited with the assist. Venter scored again as the first quarter horn sounded, getting a tip on a late charge to make it 3-0 after 15 minutes.

A fourth goal came late in the second quarter when Whittington converted a penalty stroke to go up 4-0, and the Bulldogs capped the scoring midway through the third when Picciafuoco scored her second of the day and fourth of the season on a well-executed penalty corner.
