HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team defeated the Colgate Raiders 4-1 on Tuesday night at Beyer-Small Field. The Big Red improved to 9-1-2, while the Raiders dropped to 4-5-3 on the year.
Alex Harris registered the Big Red goal in the contest.
Giorgos Diakos and
Liam May were credited for the helpers.
Ryan Friedberg earned a save in the contest and improved to 9-1-2 on the year.
The Big Red were off and running and strong on the defensive-end, managing to test the Raiders net-minder Eric Widrick five times in the first-half, while Friedberg was only tested once.
Harris netted the opening goal of the contest from Diakos as the 30-minute mark approached to put the Big Red ahead 1-0.
After the half, it would be Colgate who would notch a tally first, scoring just about 10 minutes into the second-half to tie up the match at 1-1. The Big Red responded by scoring two consecutive goals of its own, coming from Martin and Latona to jump ahead 3-1.
The score would hold for the remainder of the contest, largely in part to the Big Red's back-line holding the Raiders to just a single shot-on-goal for the match. The Big Red managed to out-shoot Colgate 25-2, with 17 of Cornell's chances being on net.
"I thought we put on a professional performance today. We generated a number of good opportunities in both halves and the guys did a good job responding to Colgate's equalizer with a couple of very well taken goals",
John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned.
