Late Second-Half Tally Aids Brown to Victory Over Women's Soccer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Naya Cardoza's goal in the 78th minute helped break open a scoreless tie to lead Brown to a 1-0 victory over the Cornell women's soccer team at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday afternoon.

Lexi Quinn assisted on Cardoza's tally to aid Bella Schopp in earning a four-save clean sheet, her fifth blanking on the season for the Bears (6-3-5, 3-1-2 Ivy).

Senior goalkeeper Erica Fox made five saves in the setback for the Big Red (3-8-4, 2-4-0 Ivy). Junior midfielder Abigail Bishara recorded two shots on goal for the Big Red, while senior forward Ava Laden and junior midfielder Tanum Nelson had the other two shots on goal.

Brown owned a 17-6 advantage in shot attempts and a slight 6-4 edge in shots on target. Corner kicks favored the Bears, 7-5, which included a 6-0 total during second-half action.

Fox was tested early, stopping a pair of shots in the opening 10 minutes off the boots of Joy Okonye and Karlie Schlosser.

Bishara recorded both of her shots on goal within a two-minute span, but Schopp stopped both of the junior's shot attempts.

Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, Brown peppered Fox with four shot attempts, three of which came from freshman Ella Weil, the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week. Fox stopped Weil's first attempt before the latter two shots were off-target.

Schlosser sent a near-side corner kick toward the far post, which Quinn headed toward the middle of the goal area. Cardoza followed up with a header of her own, which was deposited into the bottom right corner past Fox, proving to be the lone tally of the match.

Nelson's shot on goal was a solid right-footed strike from 25 yards out and was nabbed by Schopp with nearly 90 seconds to play to solidify the victory for the Bears and their spot in this year's Ivy League Women's Soccer Tournament.

MATCH NOTES
• Brown increased its lead in the series over Cornell to 31-7-4, which includes winning the last 13 contests and going unbeaten over the previous 15 fixtures (14-0-1).

• The Big Red has been held scoreless against Brown in four of the last five meetings and 11 times during Brown's 15-match unbeaten streak against Cornell.

• Cornell's five first-half corner kick was one away from tying its season high for a half. The Big Red attempted six second-half corner kicks in its victory over Syracuse on Sept. 1.

UP NEXT
Cornell will conclude its regular-season schedule when it welcomes Penn (1-8-6, 0-3-3 Ivy) to Berman Field for a Senior Day tilt next Saturday, Nov. 2. First touch between the Quakers and Big Red is scheduled for 1 p.m.

To qualify for the Ivy League Women's Soccer Tournament, the Big Red must register a win over Penn next Saturday AND have the contest between Yale and Harvard end in a draw.

If those two results occur, Cornell would conclude Ivy League play with nine points and Yale and Harvard would each have eight points, ensuring the Big Red clinches the final spot, the No. 4 seed, in the tournament, which will be held at the site of the No. 1 seed (either Columbia or Princeton).

Penn owns the series lead over Cornell, 21-7-4, and is unbeaten in 25 of the last 26 meetings against the Big Red (21-1-4). Despite the lopsided results of late against the Quakers, matches between the two programs have been relatively close, with 11 of the last 17 contests being decided by one goal or less.

Cornell's last victory over Penn came on Oct. 3, 2014, in a 3-2 triumph on Berman Field, Cornell's first win over the Quakers since 1996, which also snapped a 15-match losing streak. Caroline Growney had a three-point night and Meera Dheer scored her first collegiate goal for the Big Red. Elizabeth Crowell opened the scoring with a strike just 1:47 into the contest, as all three of Cornell's goals came in the first 32 minutes of action, as the Big Red took advantage of a gusty southern wind at its back.
