Box Score 3 NEW HAVEN, CT — The Cornell men's tennis team entered six singles competitors and one doubles team into the Ivy Championships at Yale from Friday Oct. 25 - Sunday, Oct. 27 and the Big Red had two players reach the singles semi-finals, Rodirgo Fernandes and Felipe Pinzon.
Fernandes began the singles draw in the round of 32 where he defeated Leo Pade from Dartmouth 6-4, 6-1. He then moved on to the round of 16 and defeated Valdemar Pape from Harvard 7-5, 6-4. Fernandes won his quarter-final round against Edward Liao from Yale 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, in a three set comeback after dropping the first and then he fell in the semi-final match-up against Zhengqing Ji from Yale 7-6(14), 6-2.
Pinzon began his singles competition with a three set victory over Luka Butera from UPenn 7-3, 2-6, 6-4. In the round of 16 he defeated Noah Hernandez from Brown 7-4, 6-2 and moved on to the quarter-final round where he defeated Evan Wen from Princeton 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Pinzon fell in his semi-final match-up against Carlos Alvarez Guerrero from Dartmouth in three sets losing 12-10, 5-7, 6-3.
Cornell's Petar Teodorovic made it to the quarter-final round of play before being knocked out of the tournament. Teodorovic began with a round of 32 win over Aleksandar Mitric of Princeton 6-4, 6-3. In the round of 32 he defeated third seeded Mitchell Lee of Harvard 2-6, 7-3, 6-1. Teodorovic's quarter-final match was against Ji from Yale. Ji took the victory 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Jack McCarthy won his round of 32 match for the Big Red against Brown's Alexander Bravo 6-2, 6-0, but then fell in the round of 16 to Alvarez Guerrero 6-3, 6-1.
Lastly in singles, Aman Sharma fell in the first round of competition against Wen 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, McCarthy and Teodorovic had a bye to the quarter-finals where they were defeated by Alan Kam and Wen of Princeton 7-3.
Cornell men's tennis will be back in action as it hosts its home opener tournament at the Reis Tennis Center from Friday, Nov. 1 - Sunday, Nov. 3.
