LAST TIME OUT
ITHACA, N.Y. (SEPT. 28, 2024) — Making her first collegiate start, sophomore forward Sydney Allen took advantage of her opportunity in Cornell's starting lineup, helping the Big Red secure a 1-0 clean sheet against Dartmouth last Saturday at Berman Field.

Allen broke open the scoreless contest in the 53rd minute with her second goal of the season. Both of Allen's goals have come at Berman Field and have served as game-winners for the Big Red.

Junior midfielder Mariana Kessinger logged the lone assist on Allen's goal, which was a give-and-go inside Dartmouth's 18-yard box. Kessinger's assist was the second of her collegiate career and her first in nearly a full calendar year (Oct. 7, 2023, vs. Harvard).

Senior goalkeeper Erica Fox made a pair of saves to register her first clean sheet on the season for the Big Red, snapping its seven-match winless streak.

Cornell employed an up-tempo, pressing attack on defense, which stifled Dartmouth's offense that entered the match averaging over two goals per match (2.20). The Big Red's continual pressure throughout the contest resulted in Dartmouth only managing six shot attempts, with just two on target.

STARTING IVY PLAY STRONG
With a victory on Wednesday afternoon, Cornell will have won two of its first three Ivy League matches for the first time since going 2-0-1 over the first three conference matches during the 1995 campaign.

Cornell has registered at least two wins over its first three Ivy League matches in a season on 10 occasions since the program was elevated to varsity status prior to the 1982 season, all of which occurred between 1986 and 1995.

TOURNAMENT TESTS
Wednesday afternoon's match will be the first of two consecutive matches against opponents who played in last year's NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. The latter contest will pit Cornell against Harvard at Jordan Field in Cambridge, Mass., on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Wednesday's contest is the third of five opponents Cornell will play this season that were participants in last year's NCAA  Division I Women's Soccer Championship. The Big Red previously played then-No. 19-ranked Pepperdine (Sept. 22) and Princeton (Sept. 28), both contests resulting in 3-0 setbacks.

The only other programs that fit the criteria that Cornell has yet to play this season feature a pair of Ivy League rivals in Harvard (this Sunday in Cambridge, Mass.) and Brown (Oct. 26 in Providence, R.I.).

Last year, the quintet combined for a 55-22-16 record (.677). This year, the programs have a cumulative record of 27-13-12 (.635), highlighted by all five programs having four-plus victories, highlighted by Pepperdine (8-2-2) and Princeton's (7-3-0) having at least seven victories.

Allen is the first Cornell player with multiple game-winning goals since Reagan Pauwels tallied game-winning goals in the final two matches of the 2022 campaign against Princeton and Dartmouth.

Should Allen record another game-winning goal, she would become the first Big Red player with three game-winners in a single season since Maneesha Chitanvis had three such goals in 2010.
