PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Daniel Ittycheria's second goal of the evening in the 104th minute of action sent third-seeded Princeton past No. 16 Cornell 3-2 in double overtime on Friday evening at Rhodes Field. The Tigers will face Ivy champion Penn in the finals on Sunday at 1 p.m., while the Big Red (12-3-2) will await its NCAA Tournament fate.
Alex Harris and
Danny Lokko scored goals and
Liam May assisted on both with the Big Red scores coming in the opening 20 minutes of work. Cornell couldn't hang on to the 2-0 edge, however, despite five saves from
Ryan Friedberg.
Ittycheria got the Tigers on the board, then found the back of the net again in the second 10-minute golden goal period, with Nico Nee finding a goal late in regulation to send the match into overtime. The Tigers held an 11-9 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks while controlling much of the second half after the Big Red owned much of the first 30 minutes.
The Big Red was buzzing early with good chances for
Connor Miller and Harris, and it ended up paying off in the 15th minute. Harris blasted home his 17th goal of the season - second among all Division I players this season - on a great feed in front of goal from May. Three minutes later, the Big Red lead doubled when May's cross was finished by Lokko with a perfect header that Samuels got a piece of, but couldn't stop.
Facing a two-goal deficit for the first time since its 2-0 loss at nationally-ranked Georgetown in 2-0 defeat, the Tigers answered back quickly. A corner kick in the 22nd minute allowed Princeton to get back in the game, with Daniel Ittycheria angling his header past Friedberg to get within a goal of equalizing.
Princeton carried the play for much of the final 20 minutes with Friedberg making a pair of saves to get Cornell into halftime leading 2-1. The Big Red held a narrow 5-4 edge in shots, while the Tigers had three corner kicks to two for Cornell.
The early moments of the second half was evenly played, with Cornell have the better of the chances and the Tigers having a slight possession advantage. The Big Red earned a brilliant chance in the 18th minute when
Alioune Ka hit the left post on a brilliant shot and Lokko was there for the rebound, but missed the target on an open net.
The Tigers equalized in the 83rd minute when Nico Nee volleyed in a ball with his left foot on a ball from Jasinski that was deposited just under the crossbar to make it 2-2. The Tigers had numerous dangerous chances in the final five minutes trying to get the go-ahead score, attempting five shots in the final dozen minutes and creating chances.
After a scoreless overtime period, Ittycheria walked off the win with his second of the night. He got a foot on a shot while evading two defenders and Friedberg to give Princeton the win.
