Fifth-Year Isabelle Braden’s Late Two-Pointer Secured Victory for Women’s Polo

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's polo team defeated the University of Kentucky 16-13 on Thursday night in its first game of the Bill Field Invitational thanks to a late two-point goal from fifth-year Isabelle Braden.

Freshman Naomi Marlough and  junior Lara Chong led the team in scoring with five goals each, senior Ava Ramachandran had two and Braden rounded out the Big Red scoring with one two-point goal.

"A great win for our women tonight over a scrappy Kentucky team," said Peter B. Orthwein `68 Head Coach of Polo, Anthony Condo Jr. "We opened the game on a tear and were really clicking on all-cylinders before Kentucky really got things going.  I'm very happy with our mental toughness as the game got tight down the stretch."

FIRST CHUCKER:

  • Marlough opened the scoring for Cornell with a two-point goal.

  • Ramachandran followed that up with a goal of her own for the Big Red to put Cornell up 3-0 early in the game.

  • Kentucky answered with a goal before Cornell scored three in a row to make the score 6-1.

  • Kentucky ended the first chucker with a goal from Taylor Nackers to make it 6-2 at the end of the first. 

SECOND CHUCKER:

  • Nackers opened up the second chucker of scoring with a goal for Kentucky.

  • Chong answered with a goal for Cornell. 

  • Grace Spellman notched a goal for Kentucky and it was followed up by a goal from Cornell's Marlough to end the second chucker in favor of the Big Red 8-4. 

THIRD CHUCKER:

  • Cornell opened the third chucker with three goals in a row.

  • Kentucky answered with four goals in a row, with one being worth two points. This made the score 11-9, still in favor of Cornell, at the end of the third.

FOURTH CHUCKER:

  • Nackers opened up the fourth chucker with a goal to make it a one-goal game.

  • Marlough notched a goal for Cornell to extend its lead to two.

  • Beck scored a two-point goal for Kentucky to tie the game at 12.

  • Chong notched a goal for Cornell.

  • Beck answered with one of her own for Kentucky.

  • Cornell went on a three-point run, including a two-point goal from Braden to win the game 16-13.

Up Next:

With this win the Big Red will play in the Bill Field Invitational Finals on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 12 p.m.

"The women are really looking forward to meeting UVA in the women's final on Sunday at 12 PM," said Condo Jr.
