BOSTON, Mass. -- The Cornell field hockey team fell in an early hole, but there was no quit in the Big Red as freshman Uma Kading scored twice and sophomore
Martha Broderick and junior
Jane McNally combined for a pair of huge saves in a 2-1 victory over Boston University on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field. The Big Red closed its season with a 7-9 overall mark, while BU enters the Patriot League Tournament with a 6-10 mark.
"It was a nice way to finish for us, a relatively straightforward game for us which just goes to show that when we score goals we are very good," Smith said. "We tried to play hockey today and play on the front foot which was nice to see. We go away now and look at what we need to improve on for next season."
Kading closed her freshman season with a team-best six goals and Broderick picked up her 19th career win in goal, tied for the third-most in school history. Cornell finished 6-0 this season when it leads at halftime, a mark that is 33-2 under head coach
Andy Smith. Cornell held a 6-5 edge in shots, while the Terriers had a 3-2 advantage on corners, all three coming in the second half.
Cornell dominated possession for the first 10 minutes of the game, but it was Boston University that drew first blood. Tess Csejka knocked in a rebound after her first shot was saved by Broderick and kicked back to her in scoring position. It was the Terriers' first goal in three games, but instead of deflating the Big Red, Cornell answered back.
The Big Red brought the ball into the circle and
Grace Leahy was able to knock it over to the freshman, who scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to knot it up. It stayed that way for the next 15 minutes of game action until Kading again blasted a shot past a sprawled out Thomason to take its first lead.
The Big Red held a 6-2 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corners after 30 minutes with Broderick adding a save to her season total before giving way to McNally for the second half.
BU had the better of play after the break, but was never close to scoring the equalizer. The Terriers put one shot on goal, with McNally turning it away with more than 12 minutes remaining. The home team earned a pair of penalty corners in the closing minutes, but the Big Red calmly defended both and ran out the clock for the victory.
Cornell will return seven starters and 12 letter winners next season when the 2025 campaign begins in August.
