Quakers Claim Shootout Win As Records Fall at Schoellkopf

ITHACA, N.Y. -- In a game that featured nearly 1,200 yards of offense and a complete rewrite of both record books, Penn outscored Cornell 67-49 on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Quakers won their second straight to improve to 4-4 (2-3 Ivy), while the Big Red slipped to 3-5 (2-3 Ivy).

Senior Jameson Wang threw for a career-high 401 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes, three going to sophomore Samuel Musungu to match that single-game mark as well. Musungu was one catch shy of a school record and finished with 14 for 148 yards. Wang accounted for six total touchdowns (five passing, one rushing), breaking the school mark en route to 449 yards of offense (No. 9 all-time) in the contest. Both climbed up the career charts in nearly all career and season categories as well. More on that later.

While Cornell's numbers were exceptional, Penn's were video game-like. Liam O'Brien completed 22-of-30 passes for 341 yards and six touchdowns and ran for another to account for seven scores. Three of his touchdowns were thrown to Jared Richardson, who caught nine passes for 141 yards. Malachi Hosley ran for 192 yards and two scores, his second consecutive huge game against the Big Red. Penn totaled 33 first downs and 627 yards. Three big interceptions by the defense were the difference in a game that saw the visitors score on each of their final 10 possessions, the final six reaching the end zone. There were only two punts - one apiece - in the game.

Plenty of other players had standout efforts on offense for the Big Red, with Ryder Kurtz posting his first career 100-yard receiving game (101 yards on four catches) and Robert Tucker III scoring twice, including on a 74-yard run on a fake punt that was the longest Big Red rush since 2019. Doryn Smith scored a 37-yard pass as part of a 85-yard day through the air. Defensively, Damon Barnes was credited with a game-high 12 tackles, including one for a loss, while Jeremiah Lewis made seven stops and broke up a pass.

Penn's O'Brien ended the day with 418 yards of offense, while Sam Smith was 2-of-2 on field goals and 7-of-7 on PAT kicks for 13 points from placement. His 45-yard field goal at the first half horn launched the Quakers into its near-perfect second half. Shiloh Means, Josh Narcisse and Julian Talley each had interceptions to pace the Quakers' defense.

First Quarter
• Cornell and Penn each scored in the first four minutes, utilizing the big play.
• Wang had a pair of 20-yard passes before taking it himself from 7 yards out for a touchdown to get the Big Red on the board first.
• The Quakers answered right back with the big play coming on the initial play from scrimmage when Liam O'Brien threw 61 yards to Bisi Owens down to the 10.
• Two plays later, O'Brien his Julien Stokes on a short pass from 3 yards out to even the score.
• The Big Red answered right back to go up 14-7, with a Penn holding call on third down extending the drive.
• Two more Penn penalties, including a pass interference call in the end zone, set the Big Red up for Wang to hit Tucker in the end zone.
• The junior running back juggled the ball and came down with it with 5:21 remaining in the quarter.
• The Big Red got a stop, but Penn's defense held as well to set up a punt on fourth-and-8 from the 26.
• The ball was snapped directly to Robert Tucker III and the junior exploded up the middle, reaching the end zone from 74 yards out.
• A downfield block sprung him for the final 30 yards, and Zhao's third PAT of the quarter made it 21-7.

Second Quarter
• Penn milked the clock to start the second quarter, finding the end zone on the end of a 15-play, 74-yard drive that ate up 7:11 of clock.
• The Quakers got back within a score on Richardson's 11-yard touchdown catch from O'Brien, his second passing touchdown of the day.
• The Quakers turned Cornell's first turnover of the game, an acrobatic interception by Talley after the pass was tipped by Malloy.
• Smith canned a 37-yard kick to narrow the Big Red lead to 21-17.
• Three plays later, Cornell was back in the end zone.
• A 30-yard scramble by Wang, an 8-yard pass to Musungu and a beautiful 37-yard toss to a wide open Smith pushed the Big Red lead back to 11 after Zhao's PAT.
• Penn responded with a score and a failed two-point conversion attempt to make it 28-23.
• The Big Red picked up a third-and-17 with under 90 seconds left in the half to extend its final drive, with Wang hitting Parker Woodring on the sidelines for a 23-yard gain.
• Three plays later, Shiloh Means picked off Wang for the second time in the contest with 1:09 left at Penn's own 30.
• The visitors used gains of 16 and 20 yards to get into field goal range, and Smith nailed a 45-yarder to send Penn into the locker room trailing just 28-26.

Third Quarter
• Penn and Cornell scored on the first three possessions with O'Brien running and passing for a score sandwiched around an 8-yard pass from Wang to Musungu to give the Quakers a 39-35 edge with 3:21 remaining in the half.
• The highlight of the Cornell drive was a 55-yard catch-and-run by Ryder Kurtz.
• That's when Penn took control.
• The Quakers, who had scored on four consecutive possessions to end the first half, found the end zone all six times it got the ball after the break.
• Penn led at the end of the third quarter 46-35 after O'Brien's 19-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Cisneros.

Fourth Quarter
• The Big Red turned the ball over on downs four plays into the fourth quarter and Yale struck. Then struck again after a Big Red turnover.
• Musungu caught a pair of fourth quarter touchdown passes, but it was too little too late, as 35 total fourth quarter points for the two teams ensured that the Big Red couldn't find enough possessions to get back in the game.
• The final touchdown came as the clock struck zero, and the PAT was abandoned.

NEXT UP
• Cornell will close out its 2024 home slate against Ivy leader Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Schoellkopf Field.
• The game kicks off at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
• The Big Green leads the all-time series 63-42-, though the teams have split the past four matchups.
