MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — Sophomore slugger Lauren Holt had a mammoth offensive performance in Cornell softball's season-openers on Friday at the Spring Games, belting two homers and driving 10 runs, but the Big Red fell 10-9 to Middle Tennessee (1-10) and 15-8 to Butler (6-6).
GAME ONE: MTSU, 10, Cornell 9
Holt, who led the Ivy League with nine homers as a freshman last season, got going early. She hit a two-run home run in her first plate appearance of the season to put the Big Red ahead 2-0 with two outs in the top of the first.
The Blue Raiders picked up one run in the bottom half of the first, three in the second and three more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Cornell went scoreless in the fifth but didn't go down quietly the rest of the way.
The Big Red strung together an impressive rally in the sixth, scoring seven runs to retake the lead. Holt, of course, delivered the biggest blast of the day.
The Big Red batted around in that inning, which began with singles from freshman Maddie Ullensvang and senior Lilly Travieso. Sophomore Sydney Stapf drove in Ullensvang with a double before junior Reagan London loaded the bases with a walk. Sophomore Kate Callaway plated Travieso with a single, and Stapf scored on an error on sophomore Ella Harrod's grounder to shortstop, cutting MTSU's lead to 7-5.
Two batters later, Holt drove her second collegiate grand slam over the left field fence to give Cornell a 9-7 lead.
Middle Tennessee answered that moment quickly, though, tying the game on Lexi Medlock's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. Cornell threatened to score in the top of the 7th, as Lily Travieso advanced to second on Stapf's sacrifice bunt, but the Blue Raiders escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
Amaya Harris ended the wild game with a two-out single that plated Shelby Echols in the bottom half of the seventh.
GAME TWO: Butler 15, Cornell 8
Butler plated four runs in a big first inning, but the Big Red came right back to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame. Antich singled home a run, Holt drove in two runs with a base hit, and an error by the Butler shortstop on Travieso's shallow pop-fly evened the score.
In the fourth, Butler scored three runs to take a 7-4 lead. Holt plated two more runs with a double in the bottom of that frame, bringing the Big Red within one, 7-6.
From there, the Bulldogs pulled away from Cornell, tacking on two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh. Cornell scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on Travieso and Stapf singles.
Holt, a 2023 second-team All-Ivy selection, finished her impressive day at the plate with five hits in eight at-bats and drove in more than half (58%) of Cornell's runs over the two games.
