PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- History was made at the 2024 National Collegiate Individual Championships where two Big Red battled in the finals of their respective brackets on Sunday afternoon. Both emerged victorious.
Veer Chotrani, the no. 1 seed in the Division A Pool Trophy bracket, earned the right to the title of National Champion, becoming the first in Cornell men's squash history.
Syan Singh followed suit, earning a second-team All-America nod for his win in the Molloy West finals.
Chotrani, who also was named first-team All-America for his efforts, began his journey on Friday, March 8, with a 3-0 sweep of Nicholas Serna of Drexel, The duo already had met once this season, facing off in the first match of the spring stretch in Chotrani's return to the court after taking the fall semester off, where Chotrani also won, 3-0. The senior kept up his pace with a 3-1 win in the quarterfinals and a 3-0 win in the semifinals, each over opponents from Penn. In the finals, he got his second meeting of the season against Mohamed Sharaf, which went the way of Chotrani in a 3-1 decision after he lost his first match.Â
Singh's path to the finals came through three new faces. after posting a 4-1 win over Matthew Wang of Navy, he claimed a 3-0 sweep against Columbia's Harold Castiaux. The freshman got off to a hot start in the semifinals, taking a quick 2-0 lead. His opponent, AbdelRahman Lasheen of Rochester, responded with back-to-back wins to force a fifth game. The fifth game came down to the wire, with Singh powering out a 12-10 win to advance to the finals. The championship game matched the semifinal round, with Singh taking a quick 2-0 lead before his opponent, Lewis Anderson of St. Lawrence who was seeded no.1 overall in the bracket, answered with two wins to knot the match at two. Singh dug deep in the final game to post a convincing 11-7 win to win the Molloy North Cup.
