WASHINGTON, D.C. — George Washington swept the Cornell softball team in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, beating the Big Red 14-6 in the first game and 13-0 in the second at the GW Softball Complex. The Big Red fell to 2-5 on the season, while George Washington improved to 6-7.Â
Game 1: George Washington 14, Cornell 6 (six innings)
Behind sophomores Lauren Holt and Ella Harrod, Cornell raced off to a 6-0 lead.Â
Holt, the Ivy League's hottest hitter to start the season, put Cornell ahead in the top of the first, driving in two runs with a double to left center. She plated Cornell's third run two innings later with another double, her fourth of the season.Â
Harrod cleared the bases in the top of the fourth inning, scoring Kate Callaway, Marisa Zorrilla and Lily Travieso on a double to left field. The game got away from the Big Red from there.Â
George Washington scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to flip the game and six more in the sixth to end it. The Colonials, which finished the game with 13 hits and six walks, batted around in both innings.Â
Game 2: George Washington 13, Cornell 0 (five innings)
The Colonials got to the Big Red early, scoring four runs in the first and two more in the second en route to a 7-0 lead. They scored five in the third and one in the fourth.Â
George Washington scored seven of their runs on singles. Mandy Lauth, Ashley Corpuz and Paige Hayward drove in three runs apiece.Â
George Washington pitcher Cece Smith gave up two hits, struck out five and walked three in 4.2 innings of work. Zorrilla and Maddie Ullensvang had the hits for the Big Red.Â
