BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 36 ranked Cornell men's tennis team closed its non-conference schedule on a high note on Sunday afternoon, taking down No. 52 Indiana University, 4-1, from the IU Tennis Center. With the victory, the Big Red is now 13-4 on the year and snapped an eleven-match home winning streak for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers took the early advantage by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to take the opening point. Michael Andre and Ilya Tiraspolsky, who are ranked No. 50 in the latest ITA rankings, handed Adit Sinha and Nathan Mao their first loss in nearly a month with a 6-3 win, while Facundo Yunis and Luc Boulier took a 6-3 decision over Petar Teodorovic and Eric Verdes.
Cornell would take the first point of singles action on the shoulders of Radu Papoe, as the junior stretched his winning streak to three straight and took down his sixth ranked opponent of the spring with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over No. 53 Sam Landau to tie things at one. The streak continued for the Big Red into the No. 3 spot, with Teodorovic earning a sweep of Michael Andre, pushing Cornell to a 2-1 lead and extending his winning streak to three straight matches.Â
Cornell was not done ripping off wins in singles, as Verdes had to work in the second set to get it done, but took a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win against senior Jagger Saylor to put the Big Red a point away from clinching the match and earn his sixth victory in seven tries this spring. Freshman Felipe Pinzon got the honor of clinching the win for the Big Red, battling it out to take a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Deacon Thomas to up his winning streak to three consecutive outings.
The Big Red's victory over Indiana also extends its winning streak to eight straight over a member of the Big Ten Conference dating back to a 4-3 win over Penn State on Jan. 30, 2022 from the Reis Tennis Center.Â
