Brown Beats Softball 10-2 In Six Innings

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Brown Bears scored at least one run in all but one inning on Sunday morning as they beat the Cornell softball team 10-2 in six innings at Niemand-Robison Field to start the delayed three-game series between the teams.

Brown pitcher Alexis Guevara pitched all six innings and allowed six hits. She struck out five batters and walked two. Cornell fell to 4-20 overall and 2-8 in the Ivy League, while Brown improved to 11-17 overall and 4-6 in the league.

The Bears jumped on the Big Red in the first inning, scoring runs on singles from Jasmine Hsiao and Brianna Rodriguez. Leah Carey brought home another with a single in the second to put Brown ahead 3-0.

In the third, Hsiao doubled home two runs before Dara English drove in one with a double of her own, giving the Bears a 6-0 lead.

The Big Red showed some life in the third inning when freshman Hailey Pirkey blasted her second career home run to left center. Maria Zorrilla cut Cornell's deficit to 6-2 in the fourth with an RBI single to shallow right but was thrown out trying to advance to second, ending Cornell's chance at a two-out rally.

Lily Berlinger got a run back for Brown in the top of the fifth with a home run to left center. Hsiao scored to make it 8-2 when English attempted to steal second but returned to first safely after getting caught in a rundown.

Brown added two more runs in the sixth and kept Cornell scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to close the run-rule victory.

Cornell pitcher Kyrie Denny pitched all six innings and allowed 11 hits. The Big Red committed three errors in the field.

Sophomore catcher Lauren Holt threw out to runners attempting to steal bases.
