Softball Splits Doubleheader With Harvard

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team (7-25, 4-13 Ivy League) split its doubleheader with the Harvard Crimson (23-15, 13-7 Ivy League) on Saturday at Niemand-Robison Field, taking game one before losing in five innings in game two.

Game One: Cornell 10, Harvard 6

A five-run fourth inning and a three-run sixth inning lifted the Big Red to its seventh win of the season, 10-6 over Harvard in the first game of the doubleheader.

Harvard took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth before the Big Red loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Ella Harrod, the team's leader in batting average, plated two runs with a double down the line to tie the game at three. Two more runs scored when junior Emma Antich singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, putting the Big Red ahead 5-3. Freshman Maddie Ullensvang ripped a double to center to score Antich and give the Big Red a 6-3 cushion.

With the Big Red leading 7-4 in the top of the sixth, Harvard scored two runs to cut its deficit to one. But the Big Red responded and put the game away in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Lilly Travieso singled to score Hailey Pirkey, and Harrod plated two more runs with another double, giving the Big Red a 10-6 advantage. Harrod's four RBI marked a career-high.

Sophomore pitcher Kyrie Denny earned the win, her second of the season. Junior Maxine McCraw entered the game with two outs in the sixth and earned the save, the first of her career.

Game Two: Harvard 19, Cornell 1 (five innings)

Harvard homered six times in a 19-1, five-inning victory over Cornell in the second game of the doubleheader.

Sophie Sun hit three home runs, belting two-run shots in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Savannah Fitzpatrick homered twice, hitting a two-run homer in the third and a solo homer in the fourth. Maya Douglas had the other Crimson home run, a three-run homer in the first inning to blow the game open.

Lauren Holt drove in the lone Big Red run with a single in the bottom half of the first inning. Maddie Ullensvang, Lilly Travieso and Sydney Stapf had the other hits for the Big Red.

Harvard pitcher Anna Reed earned her fifth win of the season. She struck out three Big Red batters.
