PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cornell softball team (8-29, 5-16 Ivy League) lost twice to Princeton on Saturday as it finished the 2024 season at Strubing Field. Princeton (26-15, 14-7 Ivy) clinched a share of the Ivy regular season title and the right to host the league's postseason tournament.
Game 1: Princeton 4, Cornell 2
Allison Ha homered in the first inning, and Lauren Salbone singled home two runs in the second as the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Kate Callaway got the Big Red on the board in the third inning, driving home senior Marisa Zorrilla on a single through the middle. Sophomore Ella Harrod made it a 3-2 game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center that plated senior Lill Travieso.
Sonia Zhang hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting Princeton ahead 4-2.
Maxine McCraw pitched six innings for the Big Red. She struck out two batters and walked four.
Meghan Harrington earned the win for Princeton, striking out seven Cornell batters over seven innings. She allowed six hits.
Game 2: Princeton 5, Cornell 4
Cornell took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning as it looked to secure its first series victory of 2024 in the season's final game. But the Tigers, with their Ivy League title hopes dwindling, strung together a two-out rally to walk off the Big Red in dramatic fashion.
Cornell pitcher Kyrie Denny recorded the first out quickly before allowing a single and getting the second out on a sacrifice bunt that allowed Grace Jackson to advance to second base. Sonia Zhang then walked to bring the winning run to the plate.
Denny and Lauren Salbone battled as far as they could go, with Denny battling back to force a 3-2 count. On the next pitch, Salbone ripped a line-drive home run over the left field fence to win the Tigers the game and save their chances of hosting the Ivy League tournament this week.
