ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team adds 11 new Cornellians, consisting of nine freshman and two transfers. The Big Red will kick its 2024 home slate off against Marist on Saturday, Aug. 31st at 5:00 p.m. at Berman Field.
Below are new additions to the Big Red, along with a word from
John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer:
Giorgos Diakos (W/F) - Transfer from Charleston WV
"Giorgos is a talented attacking player. He has good feet and connects really well with those around him. He also mixes a high soccer IQ with a very creative mind which helps him cause problems in the final third of the field. Entering as a junior transfer this fall from Charleston WV, Giorgos should bring valuable maturity to the group"
Griffin Eck (CB) - Arlington FC
"Griffin is a tough, pacy central defender who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. He brings a nice balance of aggression and composure to the position. His level of athleticism helps him both sides of the ball, and he couples this with the kind of competitive spirit we highly value within the program"
Nate Hovan (W/F) - PA Classics
"Hovan is one of three left footed players we are adding to the team this year. Whether playing wide or up top, he causes problems for defenders through his movement with and without the ball. Nate knows how to be dangerous as an attacker—he puts himself in optimal positions for scoring and assisting, and his end product is very good"
Colin Johnson (RB) - De Anza SC
"Johnson is an athletic right back who likes to get up and down the field. He connects well in the build and enjoys contributing in the final third. He is also someone who understands the defensive side of being a fullback, and uses his size, speed and strength to lock down his side of the field"
Dominik Kolbl (CM) - Germany
"Kolbi is an intelligent, ball-winning central midfielder. He has very good feet and makes good decisions on the ball. He has the ability to help us in the build, and also in the final third. His understanding of the game and his comp will undoubtedly help us on both sides of the ball"Â
Aidan Martin (LB) - LAFC ll
"Martin is a very technical left back. He is composed in possession, and has a very varied range of passing. He does a very good job of getting forward from the fullback position, and is dangerous when in and around the opposing penalty area. His experiences with LAFC ll will stand him in great stead moving forward"
Justin Melly (CB/RB) - Loudoun United
"Melly is a highly skilled central defender, who could also play as a right back and central midfielder. He is very good in possession, and makes good decisions on the ball. He is tough, mobile and agile and he uses these attributes to good effect both sides of the ball. His time with Loudoun FC this year will benefit him and us greatly"
Campbell Reece (CM)Â - Atlanta United
"Reece is a composed central midfielder. He does a great job connecting in the build and has a very good range of passing which can often initiate attacks. He has a very infectious personality, and has very natural leadership instincts which will be invaluable for both him and the group"
Eddie Stewart (LB/CM) -Â St Louis SC
"Stewart has very good feet and he combines this with a desire and an engine to get up and down the field. His experience playing many years in central midfield has helped give him the composure to play with a high comfort level as a left back. His final third play makes him dangerous in attack and he also does a great job in the defensive third"
Bennett Wehibe (CB) - PA Classics
"Wehibe is a talented central defender who has good one v one defensive instincts. He is one of the best headers of a ball that I have seen in many years and he puts this to great use on both sides of the ball. He has a wonderful personality which helps make him a very good leader."
Ryan Thompson (GK) - Transfer from Tulsa
"Ryan is a very good goalkeeper. He is a good shot stopper, contributes very well with his feet, and has strong command of his area. He also has the personality to help make our team better both on and off the field. We are excited to have him on board".
