ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team defeated the Bucknell Bison 3-0 on Tuesday night at Berman Field. The Big Red improved to 3-0-2, while the Bison dropped to 3-3-0 on the year.
Alioune Ka and
Balazs Feher registered the Big Red goals in the contest.
Alex Harris collected an assist.
Ryan Friedberg earned his third victory of the season in net.
The defensive intensity and aggressiveness was evident early on from the teams. At the 24-minute mark, Ka was able to shift around the Bison's defense and find an opening for a goal, putting the Big Red ahead 1-0.
Cornell and Bucknell played with strong pace and physicality in the first half as each team closed out the opening half with six fouls apiece. The shots total at the half was 8-1 in favor of the Big Red, with three of those testing Bison net-minder Freddie Lapworth.
The majority of the second half was played scoreless. Cornell had its share of opportunities to light the lamp, but Lapworth stood up to the task. As the 90-minute mark approached, Harris found Ka cutting across the box for his second score of the evening to add insurance to the Big Red's lead.
Coach
John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer was satisfied with the opportunities that his team created on the offensive end and had words of praise for how the Bucknell net-minder responded. "Their goalkeeper was outstanding throughout the game which made the game quite nail-biting until Alioune got his second goal", he mentioned.
With seconds left in the contest, Feher added himself to the score-sheet to close out Cornell's 3-0 victory over Bucknell.
"Every game this season has provided different challenges for us, and highlighted areas of our game to improve upon. We are looking forward to the challenges in front of us, beginning with a talented UMBC team on Saturday night", coach Smith added.
