Big Red Plays #14 Georgetown To A Thrilling 2-2 Draw

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Cornell men's soccer team tied 2-2 with the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday evening at Shaw Field. The Big Red moved to 1-0-1 on the year, while the Hoyas shifted to 2-2-1.

Freshman defender Aidan Martin scored the first goal of his collegiate career, assisted by Alex Harris. Harris also scored a goal, serving as the game-tying tally for Cornell.

The Big Red came into the contest needing to adjust its lineup due to a red card suspension that was assessed to Andrew Johnson during the opening game against Marist.

Georgetown opened up the scoring when a shot by Georgetown midfielder Zach Zengue sailed high-right over the outstretched arms of Big Red goalie Ryan Friedberg to put the Hoyas ahead 1-0 at the 14-minute mark. Cornell managed seven shots in the first half of the game but only one would test Hoya net-minder Luca Ulrich, to no avail.

In the opening minute of the second-half, Big Red freshman defender Martin found the back of the net to tie the contest at 1-1 early in the second-half.

"It was great to see Aidan score his first collegiate goal today. He remained both strong and composed throughout the match and his goal came at a key time for us", John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned.

Zengue would score for the Hoyas in the 77th-minute when he put the ball im the low-left corner of the net. Harris would not let the Big Red go away, as he responded by finding the back of the net in the 80th-minute to tie the game at 2-2.

"It was exciting to see Alex grab his second [goal] of the season in typical fashion", Smith added.

Both teams made a push to find the game-winning marker in the closing minutes of action, but neither team would find the tally, leading to a 2-2 draw. Friedberg moved to 1-0-1 in goal on the season.

Coach Smith commended his team on the effort and resilience they showed against a highly-ranked opponent on the road. "The guys did an outstanding job against a top team. We worked tremendously hard defensively and managed to create good openings when we we went forward. Coming from behind twice on the road shows the mettle of our group", he said.

The Big Red will turn its sights to another formidable opponent in the Penn State Nittany Lions. "We look forward to competing against another top team on Monday", Smith mentioned.
