No. 20 UAlbany Holds Off Field Hockey In A Shootout, 3-2

ALBANY, N.Y. -- For the second straight season, No. 20 UAlbany outscored Cornell in a shootout and escaped with a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf. UAlbany captured its 10th consecutive triumph over the Big Red in improving to 3-1 on the year, while Cornell slipped to 0-2.

Sophomore Martha Broderick made eight saves for the Big Red, which got goals from freshman Uma Käding and sophomore Ashley Plzak. It was the first career goal for Käding and the first of the season for her teammate. Cornell held a narrow 14-13 lead in shots, with the Great Danes gaining a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.

A year ago in Ithaca, Cornell and UAlbany played to a 2-2 draw after regulation and two 10-minute overtimes only to capture victory in the shootout 4-3. This time the score, though the shootout final was 3-1.

Lara Behn, who made four saves in goal for the Great Danes and was helped out by three huge defensive saves by her teammates on Big Red penalty corners, stood tall on three of the first four Cornell stroke-off attempts with only Olivia Friedberg scoring. The Great Danes, meanwhile, scored three times in their four opportunities to claim the victory, the last coming from Alison Smisdom who scored in regulation.

Two flurries of goals meant that neither team held a lead for much of the contest. Käding potted her first score 17:06 into the game to give Cornell its first lead of the season, but Smisdom's penalty corner goal 3:45 later in the second quarter tied it up.

UAlbany made it 2-1 just before the end of the third quarter for its first lead of the afternoon when Makenna Lowe scored on a breakaway, but Plzak responded just 2:43 afterward to again knot it up. The two teams traded proverbial punches over more than 33 scoreless minutes before heading to the shootout.

It gets no easier for the Big Red with No. 1 Northwestern and No. 7 Louisville ahead on the docket next weekend as part of a trip to the Bluegrass State. Cornell faces the Wildcats on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m.
