ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team defeated the Syracuse Orange 2-1 on Tuesday night at Berman Field. The Big Red improved to 10-2-1 on the season, while the Orange dropped to 6-6-2 on the year.
Westin Carnevale (PK) and
Blake Donahue registered the Big Red goals in the contest.
Andrew Johnson was credited with the lone Big Red assist in the game.
Ryan Friedberg earned one save, and claimed his 10th win of the season between the pipes.
The Big Red nearly scored the opening strike in the first three minutes, but the attempt sailed wide left. The defensive approach by both squads was evident, with the Orange and the Big Red limiting shot-attempts toward their respective net-minders. In the 26th-minute, the Orange took advantage of a free-kick, as they would register the first shot-on-goal of the contest and make it count to earn a 1-0 lead.
"I thought we were unlucky to go in at halftime one goal down. We created enough good looks in the first half but couldn't capitalize.",
John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer
mentioned.
Carnevale made the penalty-kick count in the 62nd minute, to bring the game level a 1-1. In the 77th-minute, a slew of shots-on-net led to a Big Red score by Donahue to put Cornell in front 2-1. The intensity picked up in the final 15 as the Orange pushed for an equalizer, but the Big Red held strong to earn itself a key non-conference victory over Syracuse.
"We did a great job staying patient in the second half and continued to ask questions of them. Our patience paid off with two good goals from Westin and Blake.", Smith added.
"Now we get to solely focus on the rest of the Ivy League slate beginning with a great matchup against Brown where we celebrate a fantastic group of seniors.", Smith concluded with.
