Six Different Goal Scorers Power Field Hockey Past LIU

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Six different players scored and the Cornell field hockey team dominated in all phases en route to a 6–0 victory over LIU on Monday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red improved to 8-1, while the Sharks slipped to 1-10.

Cornell held a 34-6 edge in shots and earned 17 penalty corners in improving to 5-0 at home and 3-0 at the new Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red scored three times in the second quarter and added two more in the third to pull away from the feisty Sharks.

After a scoreless first quarter, sophomore Uma Käding opened the scoring off a penalty corner in the 17th minute, finishing a setup from Vivienne Mueller and Julia Ramsey. Ramsey's assist was the 30th of her career. Juniors Emma Poplyk and Ashley Plzak added goals before halftime, with Plzak assisting on another later in the match and finishing with four points on the day.

Senior Grace Leahy and freshmen Stella Thibeault and Chloe West rounded out the scoring, with the rookies each finding the back of the net for the first times in their career. while Mueller notched two assists.

Goalkeeper Jane McNally and Tayla Williams split the shutout in the cage, with Williams making a key stop on a third-quarter penalty stroke to preserve the clean sheet. She posted two saves in the win.

LIU goalkeeper Emma Capparelli finished with 16 saves under heavy pressure and Lotte Haagmans squeezed off five of the team's six shots, putting two on goal.

QUOTABLE

"I thought we played well, scored six quality goals, kept a clean sheet, and got everyone involved - it was a good all-around performance. At 8-1, we're in a solid spot, but now we're heading into the meat of the season. We've got some big fish to fry with top-ranked opponents coming up, and if we want to be competing for big things at the end of the year, these next few weeks are critical." -- Andy Smith, Head Coach of Cornell Field Hockey
