Ramsey, McNally Lead Big Red Past Penn in Shootout Thriller

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior Julia Ramsey scored the equalizer late in regulation and delivered the clinching shootout goal, while senior Jane McNally stopped eight shots total as Cornell closed the 2025 season with a 3-2 victory over Penn in a double-overtime thriller Saturday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field.

The Big Red closed its season with an 11-4 record (4-3 Ivy) and tied for third place in the final regular season Ancient Eight standings, but did not qualify for the four-team conference tournament due to tiebreakers. Penn fell to 8-7 (2-5 Ivy) with the loss.

Uma Käding put Cornell ahead midway through the second quarter off a setup from Ramsey, but the Quakers rallied with two goals in a two-minute span in the fourth. Ramsey responded just 23 seconds later, converting a penalty corner from Chloe West to tie the game at 2–2 and force overtime.

After two scoreless extra periods, Cornell prevailed in the shootout behind conversions from Annabel Cheveley, Vivienne Mueller, and Ramsey. McNally made eight saves through 80 minutes, while Ruby de Frees had seven for Penn. Cornell outshot the Quakers 20–19 and held a 6–5 edge in penalty corners.

The Big Red's postseason hopes ended moments later when Brown defeated Dartmouth 3–2 in overtime, eliminating Cornell on a tiebreaker.

QUOTABLE
"I thought we played really well and controlled the game for nearly 60 minutes before a couple of mistakes put us behind. But we dug deep, showed incredible resilience, and found a way to win in the shootout. I'm so proud of this group - they've given everything to this program. It's sad to see our seniors go, but what they've done for Cornell field hockey will be remembered for a long time."  -- Andy Smith, Head Coach of Cornell Field Hockey
