HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth running back D.J. Crowther rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns as the Big Green defeated Cornell 24-14 on Saturday afternoon at Buddy Teevens Stadium at Memorial Field, snapping the Big Red's four-game winning streak.
Cornell (4-5, 3-3 Ivy) struggled to contain Crowther throughout the afternoon, while Dartmouth (7-2, 4-2 Ivy) controlled the clock for 35:06 and converted 11-of-18 third-down attempts to secure the victory.
Dartmouth opened the scoring on its second possession when Owen Zalc connected on a 25-yard field goal to cap an 11-play, 69-yard drive, giving the Big Green a 3-0 lead with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter.
Cornell answered early in the second quarter when junior quarterback
Garrett Bass-Sulpizio capped a 14-play, 96-yard drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown, his seventh rushing score in as many games.
Caden Lesiewicz's extra point gave the Big Red a 7-3 lead with 4:34 left in the half.
The Big Green struck back quickly when Crowther broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run on a three-play, 75-yard drive, reclaiming the lead at 10-7 with 3:04 remaining in the second quarter.
Dartmouth extended its advantage in the third quarter with an 12-play, 72-yard drive that culminated in Crowther's 20-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 17-7 with 8:22 left in the period. The Big Green added to their cushion early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Grayson Saunier scored on a 1-yard rush to cap a 12-play, 63-yard drive, making it 24-7 with 14:17 remaining.
Cornell fought back late in the fourth quarter when Bass-Sulpizio found sophomore wide receiver
TJ Hamilton for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 5:10 remaining, cutting Dartmouth's lead to 24-14. The eight-play, 77-yard drive marked Hamilton's first career touchdown reception.
The Big Red attempted an onside kick following the score but Dartmouth recovered and ran out the remaining time to secure the victory.
Bass-Sulpizio finished 37-of-45 passing for 328 yards and a touchdown. Junior tight end
Ryder Kurtz led Cornell receivers with nine catches for 91 yards, while freshman
Ryan Matulevich added eight receptions for 68 yards. Hamilton finished with four catches for 47 yards and the score. On the ground, Cornell managed just 41 yards on 17 carries. Sophomore running back
Jordan Triplett paced the attack with 46 yards on 12 attempts.
Defensively, senior
Damon Barnes led the Big Red with 12 tackles, while senior
Joey Cheshire added 10 stops. Senior
Ben Sahakian recorded half a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.
For Dartmouth, Crowther carried 31 times for 197 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.4 yards per attempt. Saunier completed 13-of-23 passes for 122 yards while rushing 11 times for 43 yards and a score. Chris Corbo led Big Green receivers with five catches for 53 yards.
Dartmouth held a decisive advantage in time of possession (35:06-24:54) and total offense (376-369 yards), while the Big Green converted 11-of-18 third-down attempts compared to Cornell's 6-of-11 mark.
