ITHACA, N.Y. -- One of the most prestigious senior awards at Cornell, the Richie Moran Award, will be presented to the 2021-24 recipients — Lindsay Browning (2021), Emeka Eneli (2022), Caroline Ramsey (2023) and
CJ Kirst (2024) — at the Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner on Nov. 22.
The award, which was instituted in 1989, is presented to a senior student-athlete who has distinguished himself/herself through "academics, athletics and ambassadorship." Like each of the previous winners, the award's description seemed to be written for all four winners.
A two-time All-American and the 2020 Ivy League Player of the Year, Browning graduated as Cornell's career leader in goals-against average (1.50) and save percentage (.937), with 18 shutouts — second-most in program history. A Patty Kazmaier Top-10 finalist, she earned two All-ECAC and two All-Ivy honors while backstopping Cornell to the nation's No. 1 ranking in 2019-20 with a 28-2-3 record. Browning received the Charles H. Moore Outstanding Senior Varsity Athlete Award and later played professionally for the PWHPA's Team Sonnet. Sher served as team captain as a senior and graduated with honors with a degree in Biological Engineering where she was a research assistant and TA for senior courses. A coach and mentor for the Cornell Cub Club from 2018-22, she was a member of the Cornell Naval ROTC as a Company Commander, Quill & Dagger Senior Honor Society, Mortarboard Der Hexenkreis Senior Honor Society, Scabbard & Blade Honor Society, Semper Fidelis Society and volunteered as a canine companion and dog walker for SPCA of Tompkins County.
A second-team All-American as a senior, Eneli led Cornell to the NCAA second round and earned back-to-back first-team All-Ivy and All-Region honors. He finished his career with 60 points (21 goals, 18 assists), ranking seventh all-time, with his 18 assists tied for second in program history. A three-year captain, Eneli was selected 25th overall in the MLS SuperDraft and went on to captain Real Salt Lake. He has earned multiple call-ups to the U.S. Men's National Team, recording two caps and an assist. For the Big Red, he was a three-year captain with an exemplary grade point average while earning his degree in Biological and Environmental Engineering.
One of the most decorated players in program history, Ramsey was a two-time All-American, the 2023 NFHCA Mideast Regional Player of the Year, and the Ivy League and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year. She set Cornell single-season records with 24 goals and 54 points while leading the Big Red to a school-record 12 wins. A three-year captain, Ramsey graduated as the program's all-time leader in goals, game-winning goals, points, defensive saves and single-game scoring. An NCAA Woman of the Year nominee for Cornell, she posted a near 4.0 grade point average in Biological Sciences. A three-year captain, she was a member of SAAC and participated in Big Red Leadership Institute. Ramsey served as a Women's Sports Medicine Center Intern and was a volunteer tutor for New Horizons of Southwest Florida.
The 2025 Tewaaraton Trophy winner and NCAA Champion, Kirst set the NCAA Division I career goals record (247) and finished 10th all-time in points (345). A three-time first-team All-American, he earned Ivy League and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year honors twice and was the MVP of both the NCAA and Ivy League Tournaments. In 2025 he tied the NCAA single-season goals record (82) and set Cornell and Ivy League records with 115 points. The No. 1 overall pick in both the PLL and NLL Drafts, Kirst has also represented Team USA internationally. USILA All-Academic pick, he was the face of the sport of lacrosse and one of the game's greatest ambassadors. Kirst was a two-year captain for the Big Red and the 2024 carrier of the team's Hard Hat.
The brainchild of Cornell alum Jay Spiegel in early 1989, the Richie Moran Award was first given that fall to women's soccer player Jennifer Smith '90. Spiegel's idea was to honor a scholar-athlete who also exhibited the type of Ivy League spirit Cornellians seek to emulate — that of not only excellence in scholarship and athletics, but also in service to the community. At the same time, Spiegel thought it was appropriate to name the award after someone who was a great example for these attributes.
"Only one person came to mind — Richie Moran," Spiegel said. The excellence of his teams was unquestioned, but one little known fact outside of the Athletic Department was that his players consistently had the highest grade point average among all of Cornell's teams. Richie's service to the greater community at Cornell, in Tompkins County, and around the globe was legendary. Who better to bear the name of a prestigious award to be given to one senior scholar-athlete?"
