Beyond the Box Score: The Princeton Game

ITHACA, N.Y - Go "Beyond the Box Score" of Cornell football's 20-17 win over Princeton on Saturday, Nov. 2. 
 

TEAM

• With the win, Cornell's all-time record is now 662-565-34, including 454-239-21 at home and 309-205-15 at Schoellkopf Field.

• The Big Red holds a 233-231-15 record in the month of November.

• Cornell upped its mark to 53-433-1 all-time when trailing at the end of the third quarter.

• It's the first time Cornell has overcome a deficit of two touchdowns or more since also trailing Yale 14-0 before capturing a 23-21 win over the Bulldogs on Sept. 23, 2023.

• Cornell also overcame a double-digit deficit to win in consecutive games for the first time since 1999 when it rallied from a 21-point deficit to win 33-28 at Brown on Oct. 2, then came back from 13 points down the following weekend at home against Harvard in a 24-23 triumph.

• It was the second consecutive home game that Cornell's defense shut out Princeton in the second half (2023 in a 14-3 loss)

• Cornell's victory was its 600th in games played on a Saturday (all-time record of 600-509-30).

• The three-game home win streak is its longest since capturing four straight at Schoellkopf over the final game of 2011 and the first three games of the 2011 season.

• It's the first time the Big Red won consecutive home games in three straight weeks since 1972 when it defeated Colgate (37-7), Rutgers (38-22) and Penn (24-20) from Sept. 30 to Oct. 14.

• The Big Red defense held Princeton's offense to 1-for-12 on third downs, tied for the fewest third down conversions in a game in school history (done 11 times previously, last time when Columbia was 1-for-15 on Nov. 18. 2023).

• Cornell's offensive line did not allow a sack for the second time this season and the sixth time in the past two years.

• With its 213 rushing yards as a team, the Big Red posted its third 200-yard game this season - the most since also piling up three 200-yard rushing games in 2009.

• In its three-game win streak, Cornell has averaged 48.0 rushing attempts per game. The last time it had 144 or more over three consecutive games was in 2017 when it had 153 in a three games span (2-1, 59 vs. Harvard, 41 vs. Bucknell and 53 vs. Brown).

INDIVIDUAL

• Senior Ben Sahakian became the first Cornell player to force two fumbles in the same game since Michael Turner '15 had a pair against Brown on Oct. 26, 2013.

• Senior Doryn Smith had five catches for 39 yards =, becoming the 28th player in school history to reach 1,000 career yards. He ended the night with 1,002 yards on 91 catches.

• Junior Garrett Bass-Sulpizio has rushed for a touchdown in five straight games, the first Big Red player to do that since Chad Levitt '97 found the end zone in six straight games during the 1996 campaign. He has six rushing touchdowns over that span.

• Junior All-American tight end Ryder Kurtz had four catches for 23 yards and a touchdown, pushing him to 64 career catches for 805 yards - the latter a new Big Red record for tight ends. He is also now three receptions from breaking the Cornell tight end record in that category.

• With 54 total yards, senior Davon Kiser upped his career total to 1,004 all-purpose yards for the Big Red to become the 99th player to hit 1,000 for a career.

• With five tackles against Princeton, senior Damon Barnes upped his career total to 148, good for 65th all-time at Cornell.

• Senior Joey Cheshire added six tackles to his career totals and now stands at 114, tied for 115th all-time and eight away from joining the top 100.

• With his three tackles, senior Michael O'Keefe has increased his career total to 96 and is just four away from becoming the 146th player in the Big Red's 138-year history to hit the century mark for their career.

• Freshman Dalten Phelan registered his first career sack.

• The most consecutive starts are offensive lineman Dylan Page (21 games), long snapper Nolan Albright and offensive lineman Kevin Ma (17 games apiece) and linebacker Joey Cheshire (15 games).
