Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. -- A tiebreaker win by
Jack McCarthy at No. 3 singles over his ranked opponent clinched Cornell's 4-3 victory over No. 33 Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center. The 27th-ranked Big Red held home court to improve to 8-3 on the season. The Spartans fell to 4-5 on the season.
With the dual tied 3-3 following Michigan State's comeback win at No. 5 singles to even it up, McCarthy and No. 60 Matthew Forbes battled it out in the third spot on the ladder. McCarthy won the first set 6-4 and dropped the second, 7-6(2) before going to five tiebreakers before clinching the win and setting off the Reis crowd with his electric victory. McCarthy bumped his season record to 9-4 with the win.
The Big Red got on the board with the doubles point, winning in the first two positions and leaving a riveting 6-6 match at No. 3 before moving to doubles.
Cornell extended its lead to 2-0 after a straight-sets win by
Rodrigo Fernandes at No.4, but consecutive wins by Michigan State, including by No. 27 Aristotelis Thanos over Cornell's 40th-ranked
Radu Papoe at No. 1, evened the second. The teams traded points back as
Nathan Mao rallied from a first-set loss to claim the last two 6-4, 6-4, before the visitors again knotted the match with a triumph at No. 5, setting up the exciting finish with McCarthy bringing it home.
Cornell will be back in action this coming weekend when it faces No. 39 Yale (Saturday at 11 a.m.) and No. 68 VCU (Sunday at 10 a.m.) at the Cary Leeds Tennis Center in the Bronx.
