ITHACA, N.Y. – A late rally in the sixth and seventh innings was not enough for Big Red softball (9-8, 1-2 Ivy) as they fell 8-7 to Yale (15-13, 5-1 Ivy) at home in the final game of the weekend series on Sunday.
Cornell totaled 12 hits in the final matchup led by Addison Pressley and Ella Harrod each going 3-for-4 at the plate. Harrod smacked a home run over the left field fence to earn two RBIs in her first at bat of the afternoon.
However, The Bulldogs struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Ella Gandolfo drew a leadoff walk, and Lauren Perren followed with an RBI double to open the scoring. An error later in the inning allowed a second unearned run to cross the plate.
Harrod's home run tied the game 2-2 for the Big Red. She would then add another run in the second inning with a double to right field to tie the game again to 3-3 after Yale had regained the lead in the top half of the frame.
Yale pulled away in the fourth inning with a three-run outburst. Isabella Fortini delivered a two-run double to break the tie, and SJ Mull added an RBI single to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 7-3. Sophie Woodridge added a solo home run in the sixth inning, giving Yale an 8-3 advantage heading into the home stretch.
The Big Red started its rally in the bottom of the sixth. A defensive miscue by Yale allowed the first run to score, and Harrod drove in two more with a single to right center, trimming the deficit to 8-6. Cornell came within one run in the bottom of the seventh when Lauren Holt doubled to center field, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout to second base from Susanna Pate. Maddie Ullensvang battled at the plate for a walk then advanced to second base with a single from Emma Antich. Cornell would leave the batters on base as Yale's pitcher would grab one final strikeout of the game.
