ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell softball (10-10, 3-3 IVY) took the first home series since 2023 against Dartmouth (10-11, 3-2 Ivy) with a 13-9 final game at Niemand-Robison Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sydney Stapf was the star of the weekend continuing Saturday going 2-for-3 at the plate and scoring two runs.
The Big Red had hot bats all the way around with 14 hits resulting in 13 runs. Cornell opened the game in a stunning six run inning that included back-to-back home runs from Emma Harshberger to score two and followed up by a solo shot from Lauren Holt to put the Big Red up 3-1.
But they weren't done that inning, Charlize Cai and Emma Antich would add two more hits causing a Dartmouth pitching change. Hailey Pirkey walked to load up the bases just in time for Maddie Ullensvang to hit one down the left field line to score Cai then Pirkey used a passed ball to add the last run of the inning.
Cornell continued its momentum with a three and out top of the second. Harshberger and Holt each became base runners with a single and a walk before each advanced on another passed ball. Cai hit a RBI single to the right fielder to extend Cornell's lead to 7-1. After that run, the Big Green made another pitching change to put Hall in and close out the inning with a walk and three strikeouts.
Dartmouth started up their offence in the fourth inning, scoring five unearned runs off four hits.
Lauren Holt put her second one over the center field fence in another solo homer. This is the second time this season with two home runs in the same game by Holt.
CU responded to a run put on the board by Dartmouth in the top of the fifth with two of their own off of hits from Stapf, Harrod and Harshberger.
With two base runners on in the sixth, Dartmouth hit a double out to right field to bring the game within one at 10-9 in favor of the Big Red.
Cornell would break out in the bottom of the sixth once again. Emma Antich and Susanna Pate found themselves on the bases so that Ullensvang could lay down a sacrifice bunt to put them into scoring position. Stapf would then pick up a walk to load the bases once again. Harrod would sneak a hit up the middle to score two then Harshberger copied her to score the final run of the game.
The Big Red went three and out with Kyrie Denny on the mound to win the game 13-9 and take the series.
