Softball Takes First Game of Series Against Penn in Five

ITHACA, N.Y. –Cornell softball (14-14, 5-8 IVY) started off their final weekend series at Niemand=Robison Field with an 8-0 five inning win over Penn (2-31-1, 0-16 IVY).

The Big Red started the game off in the bottom of the second inning with a big swing from Hailey Pirkey with a solo home run over the left field fence. At the top of the second inning, Lauren Holt caught two Penn runners stealing at second base with the last out using assistance from Ella Harrod, Emma Harshberger and Emma Antich in a rundown situation.

Cornell used aggressive baserunning to score three more runs in the third starting off with a single to center field from Harrod that scored Addison Pressley from first base. Harshberger came up next with an outfield single of her own to score Harrod off second base. Then Charlize Cai laid down a bunt for a single, Penn's first baseman tried to then throw over to third base to get the lead runner but overthrew to allow Harshberger to score.

The Big Red finished off the game in the fifth inning with a double from Harrod and single from Harshberger setting up a three-run home run for Holt taking a 7-0 lead. Pirkey and Maddie Ullensvang added a double and single before the game ended on a passed ball by the Quakers allowing Pirkey to score.

  • Hailey Pirkey hit her first home run and sixth double of the season.
  • Lauren Holt leads the team and is second in the Ivy League with nine home runs.
  • Lauren Holt caught two runners stealing and is now second in the Ivy League.
  • Emma Harshberger remains in the top ten in the NCAA Toughest to Strikeout with three hits on three at bats.
  • Eight of nine of Cornell's starting lineup has recorded a homerun this season.
  • After Friday's game, Cornell's all-time record against Penn moved to 48-38.

UP NEXT

Cornell will finish out the series against Penn on Saturday with a double header starting at 11 a.m. weather permitting. In case of rain out, game three will be made up at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The senior day ceremony will be held before the start of the first game on Saturday.
