Softball Heads Out To First Road Series Against Brown

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell softball (11-9, 3-3 IVY) will travel to Brown (15-9, 3-3 IVY) this weekend for its first road series of the season. The series is scheduled to begin on Saturday at Brown Softball Field in Providence R.I.

SCOUTING BROWN

Brown has the best overall win percentage in the Ivy League (.625) but is 3-3 in Ivy play losing all three games to Dartmouth then sweeping Penn.

At the plate, Alaana Laurel Moody is leading the Bears and the Ivy League with a .438 batting average and has hit eight home runs, the most in the league.

Alexis Guevara has started in 13 games on the mound for Brown, pitching 78 innings and has the lowest ERA in the Ivys at 1.88 an has struck out 80 batter.

Brown picked up two Ivy weekly honors. Laurel Moody was named Co-Ivy League Player of the Week and Amanda Deng was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Moody earned her second Player of the Week honor of the season as she hit .727, while slugging 1.273 and posting an on base percentage of .769. Moody finished the weekend with eight hits, two home runs and five RBI. Deng earned her first weekly honor after matching Moody with a .727 batting average, collecting eight hits in 11 at bats. Deng led Brown with six RBI and six runs scored, while finishing the weekend with two doubles and a home run.

IVY STANDINGS

Princeton is the only team with a perfect conference record at 6-0. They are followed in the standings by Dartmouth, Columbia and Yale.

Cornell is still at the top of the league with a .339 batting average and on base percentage .415 with Ella Harrod as the third best individual holding a .414 batting average. Lauren Holt is third in slugging percentage (.750) and fourth in on-base percentage (.483), RBIs (18) and home runs (5).

Brown has the lowest ERA for pitchers led by Alexis Guevara with 1.88 individually.

Harvard is second in both batting average (.313) and pitching ERA (3.73).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK!

Sydney Stapf has been named the Ivy League's Co-Player of the Week alongside Brown's Laurel Moody. This is her first accolade from the league this season.

Stapf had an explosive weekend, batting .750 across three games with eight at-bats. She racked up five runs, six hits, including a double and a home run, while driving in four RBIs and laying down a sacrifice bunt. She totaled a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .778 OBP with a RBI double in the seventh inning of the first game to start the comeback to give Cornell the first win of the weekend. Stapf also added five putouts in left field.

The Michigan native has started in all 20 games for the Big Red where she has totaled 19 hits with a team leading five doubles on a .358 batting average. She is second on the team in slugging percentage (.566) and third in RBIs with 18.

Stapf is the first Ivy Player of the Week with Charlize Cai and Emma Harshberger being named Ivy Rookie of the Week on March 10 and Feb. 24.

LAST SERIES

Across a three-game series against Dartmouth, the Big Red had a total of 25 hits (.325) with five home runs and two doubles.

Sydney Stapf was the star of the weekend leading the team with a .750 batting average with a two-run home run and rally starting double on the weekend.

Lauren Holt hit two home runs in a single game for the second time this season, last against Yale a weekend ago. The junior was 4-for-7 on the weekend (.571) with the team high slugging percentage of .1.571, key hits and base running to aid the Big Red in a series win.

The Big Red won the first game of the series with a late rally in the seventh inning. The rally started with a double from Stapf to score walked Maddie Ullensvang. Pressley beat a throw from the infield to reach first safely before she stole second on the next pitch. Emma Harshberger watched four balls loading the bases and bringing Lauren Holt up to bat. Holt poked one to the outfield to tie up the game at 5-5 with Harshberger standing on third. A passed ball a few pitches later ended the game for the Big Red as Harshbarger scored the final run.

The momentum from the first game rolled over to the beginning of the second for each team scoring 10 total runs in the first three innings. Dartmouth homered over the left field fence to score three right off the bat. Cornell broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth with a two-run shot from Stapf over the left field wall to take the 7-5 edge. Dartmouth would hold the Big Red at those seven runs as they added four unanswered runs over the sixth and seventh inning taking the second game 9-7.

Cornell would break out in the bottom of the sixth once again in the third game. Emma Antich and Susanna Pate found themselves on the bases so that Ullensvang could lay down a sacrifice bunt to put them into scoring position. Stapf would then pick up a walk to load the bases once again. Harrod would sneak a hit up the middle to score two then Harshberger copied her to score the final run of the game.
